Favorite genre?
« on: Friday, October 23, 2009, 07:04:35 PM »
Okay, I was thinking today about different genres of games. And I can't really come to a conclusion about my favorite. I think it's RPGs, or "pseudo-rpgs", games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Fallout, even WoW. I also like action games. A mix of shooters, and 3rd person action games, and the like. Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, Half-Life, Bioshock, Batman:AA, etc.

Anyway, the thing is, after thinking about this, I believe we haven't had enough variety in the last couple years. I'm pulling this out of my ass, but I think I'd go so far as to say %70 of games currently being released regularly are FPS games, which don't get me wrong, I do enjoy, but I'd really like to see some A+ titles in other genres more often. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough? I mean, Demons Soul's is quite the treat, but how long until something else comparable comes along? I'm really looking forward to Diablo 3, FFXIII. What else is coming along? Dragon Age maybe?

Hmm, this post went in a different direction than I intended it to. So, yeah...favorite genre?

RPG and Shooters are probably my fav. genres. And yes, probably includes its sub-genres, as well.

I'd really like to add adventure games to the mix - but they really ain't evolved enough over the years and there ain't even great newer ones on the market currently. If I was a game designer, this would be a genre I'd like to tap into - and evolutionize (is that a word?).

Well, my opinion differs based on whether it's SP or MP.

MP: hands down, fps or rts. Preferred examples through the years-  Goldeneye, Counter-Strike, Perfect Dark, Warcraft 3, CoD:UO, CoD4. I'm good at fps games but marginal at rts games because I'm not quick enough. Macro is there but micro is lacking.

SP: Just about anything. I love racing games as long as they have a nice sense of speed. Currently I'm playing Silent Storm 2 (again) which I find highly underrated as far as strategy games are concerned.

I like RPGs, Action, Adventure (as in point and click. Don't let anyone tell you a 3D platformer is an adventure game)...hell, I like a lot of them. A shorter list would probably be ones I don't like. I'm not the biggest RTS fan. I'll play some, but very very few of them do I actually like.

I do love me some FPS games but it seems that I'm either getting burnt out on them or they just arent different or interesting enough and tend to all blend together. Most of them go for realism and as such use a lot of the same weapons so it gets harder and harder to tell them apart. Looking forward to Borderlands because it looks to mix things up quite a bit.

I don't like most Japanese RPGs. Anything with random encounters I just hate. Though completely random RPGs ie, roguelikes I'm totally cool with. Go fig.

Also any game where you get to climb around on stuff and explore. Assassins Creed, Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, Spelunky, Guild Wars (more explore than climb in that one)...love that stuff. I'm pretty sure I would play a game with no enemies or goals if all you could do was explore a huge landscape and find hidden locations.

FPS definitely. This includes 3rd person shooters, if they control like a first person shooter, like Gears of War.

Actually, looking at the last year or so of games I've bought, 16/28 are shooters. (14/19 if I don't count XBLA)

EDIT: I've also noticed that I barely touch Japanese games anymore. Back in the NES/SNES days I thought the Japanese were some evil geniuses and no one else made games. These days it's rare for me to play something from Japan. Actually, if a game seems too Asian it turns me off. (I almost bought the MMO Aion, but after doing the beta weekend I saw it was way too anime and had way to many gamey things that usually only show up in asian games.)

I like practically everything, I could never choose.  Though FPS is probably a consistent love for me.  I almost never dislike a well-crafted FPS, even though I think a lot of big-name FPS games are vastly overrated (most notably Half-life 2 and anything Halo.  I still think The Darkness is one of the best games I've ever played, and easily one of the best in the last 10 years, despite not being a perfect game.  Definitely looking forward to Borderlands too, since not only do I get to shoot dudes with big guns, I get to blow up loot pinatas and get sucked into upgrading my character.

I'm a big RPG guy too.  The bulk of my gaming probably goes to RPG in terms of hours, but that's because RPGs tend to be longer than everything else (especially MMOs... which I don't play a lot of, but I have a few I've liked).  I consistently finish FPS games where a lot of other genres I never make it to the end.  But as far as actual purchasing goes... I buy tons of games from every genre.  I doubt there's a clear winner amongst all of them as far as number of titles in my collection.

It's easier for me to list genres I don't like.  I'll pretty much play anything as long as its good, the only genres I tend to steer away from are sports and RTS games.  To avoid making a huge post on what I like and don't like though, I would probably say that JRPGs are my favorite genre of games.

i spent a while trying to answer this, but i really don't know. i think when an rpg is pure top notch, such as fallout 3 or mass effect, it trounces everything else. if i were to pick my favourite games though, they'd come from all different genres.

I like those platforming/action/adventure games, as well.

I pretty much like all genres equally.  The only ones I have issues playing are JRPGS.  usually as long as it's not random battle I can usually play it.  But my favorite would have to be RTS.  I have always enjoyed a good RTS.  When it comes to FPS I almost refuse to play them on console, sorry but the mouse and keyboard are much better suited for and fps IMO.

As long as the game is well designed and has a good story/campaign, I will generally like it.  I could care less about the MP component of games nowadays, and am mainly focused on the single player campaign.

In terms of genres, I particularly like stealth based games (Splinter Cell, MGS, Thief, Hitman, for example).
