Stupid when we lose an hour, awesome when we gain one.

What will you do with your extra hour of life?

I will probably do something worthless and unproductive.

That's why it's so great. We have one hour that is instantaneously erased! Rob a bank, steal a car, give to charity*! Do something completely unproductive to society!

I am currently considering spending ridiculous amounts of money on a chess set.

Damn, that's a beautiful chess set. I could definitely play a game on that board.

My grandfather passed away a week ago. Among other great qualities, he was a fantastic chess player, and was at some point a grandmaster.

When I saw that, I thought, "Wow, I should buy that and show it to.... oh."

:(

The funny thing is that I have bought expensive sets before to show to him, only to hear him say, "Foolish boy! First you need to learn how to play!"

I completely forgot about it. I ended up going to bed at like 9pm, and I went into work at 5am...instead of 6am. I guess I got an extra hour of sleep.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Pug... or did you tell us in another thread before?  My memory is shot these days.  I do remember you mentioning that he was a great chess player at some point, though.  For as long as I've enjoyed the game, I'm still pretty bad at it; but I've always been entranced by the visual appeal of it.  I did end up purchasing the set, along with an equally gorgeous red sandalwood board to go with it, and I'm considering it an investment in furniture.  These will, if all goes as planned, be set up in the living room where they can see hopefully semi-regular use aside from just looking pretty.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, Pug. I remember you telling me that he was a great chess player. The quote you gave made me laugh out loud- it is wise, but to a grandmaster, everyone needs to learn how to play. :) I would have liked to play with him.

He taught you well - you are quite good at chess. Remember how bad I was the first game we played? I learned virtually everything from playing with you.

--

And Que, you're not bad at chess at all. The only difference in the games we played (years ago) was that I just had lots of practice playing Pug. Hence, less mistakes.

The chess room sounds entirely civilized - accompanied by a nice glass of scotch and a cigar, I presume.

The plan is to have it sitting on a small wooden table in front of the leather easy chair by the bookcase and stone fireplace.  Scotch and cigar would fit in rather nicely, I think.

I'm so sorry, Pug.  My grandfather (mother's side) was a great chess player as well.  I really miss him.
