Star Trek 2009
« on: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 12:16:38 AM »
Okay, so I really enjoyed that. The characters were a whole lot more likable than I expected them to be, and the story wasn't half bad. I mean, it could use some fine tuning, but bravo J.J. Abrams. I dug it.

I always really liked the movies, but I wasn't super into the shows. I like Deep Space Nine a lot, and Next Generation was alright sometimes. This new movie was a pretty refreshing take on the whole Star Trek Universe in my opinion.

I would like to say one thing; Out of all the fictional futures of mankind portrayed in movies and in books. Zombie Apocalypse, Terminators, Aliens, Earth ran by apes, mass extinctions, disease, destruction. I really hope the future is most like Star Trek...

It's a really good movie.  I've seen it twice now, and on the second viewing the lens flare started to bother me.  That's the only complaint I have with the movie.

Yea its a good popcorn flick, Im glad Abrams took it in this new direction even though Trekky fans hate it. I was tired of the way Star Trek has been handled for a while now.

I don't care enough about Star Trek to even see a reinterpretation of Star Trek.

Really? Trekky fan's hate it?

I mean, it was getting pretty tired the way it was going. It needed something new injected into to make it viable again. I would personally like to see it get slightly darker, and get more creative with the Aliens. The new ST did okay with the Aliens, there were a couple there that looked more "Alien'y". Go Farscape with it. Giant Aliens the size of Moons, like the Boo-dong!

or Pilot...

Dammit...I really miss Farscape.

Star Trek (09).  Take the entire history of that long series, and throw it out the window, watch it shatter, then sweep away the shards so no one notices them.  If the movie had been about an entirely new universe, it would have been halfway decent.

Haha!  Actually, you're right.  Only longtime Trek fans are going to shake their heads at the direction of the new movie.  It really was entertaining in its own right.  I said as much back then, but still had fresh in my mind the complete diss of that universe's history.

I see Star Trek as one of the things you can't mess with. When you think about the stereotypical fanboy who knows fake science and fake languages, you think of Star Trek. We are not going to like it if you change anything. There is no reason you needed to mess up our timeline to make your movie. You could have done the same thing and just changed the names.

The movie itself was pretty good, but only as an 'intro' movie. The plot of the movie was pretty shit. The only think that kept it going was the introduction and development of characters. Everyone wanted to see how people would be similar/different from what they remember because even non fans know a little about the series and have probably seen a movie or two. They knew when they made this that unless it was a complete flop it was going to be a big series. Now we need to see if the movies can hold their own when they need a real plot to keep our attention.

The only thing I knew about Star Trek before this movie came out was The Simpsons parodies of it.

It was really, really good. I have no idea how it compares to a typical Star Trek movie but I fully enjoyed every minute in the theatre.

I enjoyed the movie myself, and also found it to be a good start on another look into the star trek universe.

I thought it was pretty good, but more as an introductory picture as someone mentioned. I hope that the next film sacrifices action for a more deliberate paced movie about exploration etc. The best Star Trek movies had a real sense of wonder to them.

I'm still split about the movie. I liked it as an action flick. Loved the effects and the new "look".

At the same time, I found it shallow as a Sci-Fi movie. It was lacking complexity and I had a hard time believing the characters and the plot. I still enjoyed some of the dialogue and the new Kirk, but I just didn't care about the movie beyond that. It felt too much like a teen drama in space. Maybe this was because it's the first in the series...

Like Pug mentioned above, the original movies had that sense of wonder to them and this movie didn't really capture it for me and I'm not even a huge Star Trek fan.

I really liked the new Star Trek.  Mostly as a popcorn flick, just an entertaining action movie.  The overall plot was pretty flimsy, but I rather liked the faster pace and the more in-your-face feel of it.

I tend to compare it to the "new generation" Star Trek movies, all of which were pretty horrible.  They were all complete, terrible shit and I actually kind of liked The Next Generation.  I can't even pick any that were the worst of the bunch.  Most of them seemed more like TV miniseries than actual Hollywood movies that you could see in a movie theater.  Some of the "old generation" movies were pretty good though.  The only really bad one I can think of is The Final Frontier.

Just got through watching this - wow, that was pretty kick-ass. Really dug the entire film, from start to finish. Has to easily be one of the better reboots I've seen in recent memory.
