Steam holiday sale is on now
« on: Tuesday, December 22, 2009, 06:22:14 PM »
Looks like pretty much everything has a discount of some kind, and they have some one day only specials. Worth a look if you don't mind using Steam.

Mirror's Edge is $5 again. I kicked myself when I missed the first time the deal was offered, so I think I won't let that happen again.

Also, GTA IV for under $8. Almost enough to make you forget about all the problems they had with it.

Also x2, Defense Grid for $2.50. That's tempting.

X2 is a quality game.  I haven't played the third, but 2 was really something.  Story parts are a bit wonky, but everything else is solid and pretty compelling.  Defense Grid is fucking fantastic if you like tower defense games.  I had a great time with it.  It's nothing all that revolutionary except that it looks quite impressive for a TD game.  Total steal at that price.  Anybody should get that.  Kept me up until 4 in the morning or something on at least one occasion, as I recall.

Wow, Mirror's Edge for $5?  It has to be worth that, right?

What is the Tages DRM?

Oh and I agree that Defense Grid is fantastic.  I have it on XBLA.

Easily.

Quote
What is the Tages DRM?
Tages makes DRM - more internationally known.
Since this is Steam here, Tages DRM is extra additional online DRM (on top of the Steam DRM).

You have to authenticate your game online through other additional servers.
And it usually has install limits of some sort.
Depends on what the game dev/publisher levies on it.

Mirror's Edge is easily worth the $5.  Game is pretty sweet.

I see that The Void is on there for under $5.  Made by the same guys who made Pathologic...which wasn't really good, but made grown men cry with it's atmosphere, I've heard good things.  The game looks pretty unique and surreal/cool.  Reviews have been favourable from what I've heard.

The stupid piece of shit still won't accept my credit card. It just doesn't recognize my place of residence with my ip address or some crap. It isn't an isolated problem. I have two cousins who haven't been able to buy games on STEAM because of this very problem.

Interestingly enough, EA causes no problem with my digital purchases.

I haven't heard of it, but I just looked it up and it is the sequel to Shadow of Chernobyl.

Have in Canada. Nowadays I just have someone gift me something and I reimburse them via Paypal.

But aside from the issue of bothering someone else, most of the really awesome steam sales last 24 hours, which is too small a window for me.

On the other hand, like EA's PC store, PSN has worked seamlessly for me.

The strange thing with both EA's online store and PSN is that with both of them, I have entered a fictional address in North America, yet they have no issues with taking my money.

Here with steam, I am being completely honest with my details, yet it continues to be a total bitch..

edit:

Something else that is strange: I can only see Civilization IV in advertisements. When I click on, I see nothing. Apparently steam's version of Civ IV isn't to be sold outside of North America. I already had the game, but I was just curious to see the package.

Dead Space's really good - highly recommend that one. I recently uninstalled it to make room for other games - but yeah, I'm sure I'll wind up reinstalling that one. I really want to get by that one part w/ the Asteroid part in Chapter 7.

I can't remember why on earth I never played more than 1 level of it, but I loved what I played. I liked it so much that I just recently bought Dead Space extraction just because it's Dead Space. I have to borrow my brother's Wii because I don't have one.

I could be wrong, but maybe you're just like me - you love what you play with one game (Dead Space, in your case), but then you go buy some other game (whatever it might be and for whatever reason) and somehow the one you were playing (Dead Space, in your case) winds up on the back-burner. :P That has happened to me w/ lots of games - i.e. Psychonauts. I loved what I played w/ that one, but somehow, it wound up on the back-burner b/c I bought some other game that took over my life.

Though, I took a break from Dead Space b/c of that goddamn Asteroid puzzle in Chapter 7.

But, yeah - Dead Space kicks ass. It's gonna be interesting to see what they might do w/ Dead Space 2, since there's no release date for it anytime soon...

A fast connection doesn't make Steam stop sucking, it just makes it suck less.  I won't even use it anymore I hate it so goddamn much.  The last couple things I tried to use with it were completely broken.  I just gave up trying to make it work after sifting through the thousands of forum posts from people who also couldn't get it working and couldn't get answers.  I'm just done with it.  Unless there's something I really want and I have absolutely no alternative but to deal with it, at this point it doesn't matter how cheap the shit is.

Man, even at $2.25 I still don't think I'd jump at Prey.  I have already played and beat it, and it wasn't a memorable enough of an experience to give it a whirl again.

Burnout Paradise $7.50

Orange Box $15
Killing Floor $5
Prey $2.25.

Bioshock $4.99 got added b/c they ran out of Prey keys (for now).
It says if they get enuff keys again, they'll re-run the Prey deal.

But...OMG @ Prey for $2.25. That's a great deal.

I loved Prey.  Not the best game ever, but had some really cool, fun moments.  Totally worth $5 to $10 even still.  $2.25 is practically free.

I still don't understand how you run out of keys. How long does it take to put a new key into the database? What century are we in? Am I missing something?

I remember this scenario happening with another game recently. I wasn't as annoyed because I wasn't about to buy it.

Its happened at least twice in this holiday sale alone, at least that Ive heard of. And I agree, how is this even a problem that can happen? I mean I know how it happens, that Take2 or whoever the publisher of the game is only gives Steam X number of cdkeys to sell and has to generate more, but why are they not giving Valve/Steam the ability to generate them on-demand?

Nothing major, just some custom campaigns. But with the new L4D2 SDK that includes the L4D1 textures and such, those campaigns will become playable in L4D2 anyway.

Correction, Half-Life: Source is $2.49.

I'm surprised they still charge actual money for it, though. It was basically a tech demo to show how porting HL mods to HL2 would be easy. And seeing as how pretty much no mods ever got ported over like that, I'd say it didn't work out like they hoped.

EDIT

D, your prices are all messed up. Heres the real set:

Medieval: Total War = $4.99
Half-Life: Source = $2.49
Darwinia + Multiwinia = $2.99
Shattered Horizons = $4.99
Street Fighter 4 = $9.99
Crysis: Maximum Edition (Crysis + Crysis: Warhead/Wars) = $13.59

I guess that's what I get for jumping on there exactly at 12pm.

Guess it wasn't fully updated and fully marked-down (probably from the usual X-Mas prices to the major one day price-chops) when I jumped on there to check, since they still had cross-outs on prices and stuff.

Yeah I was just about to post that. I bought Mass Effect.

I've had some problems with Steam in the past, but this time around things are going quite well. Good prices on the games, and I get pretty good download speeds (around 1.2 Mb/S). No complaints at all.
