Best Gaming Christmas
« on: Wednesday, December 30, 2009, 07:28:13 PM »
So a lot of the podcasts this passed week were christmas themed and a couple of them had discussions of what their favorite christmas memories were. I thought I'd bring that here, so what is yours?

I've been fortunate enough to be blessed with awesome parents, they knew how much my brothers and I loved games. I want to say the christmas we got the SNES was the one, but there's another I remembered that topped that. It was 1996, and during that year my older brother had gotten a compaq computer, the first real computer we had ever owned. It remained in his room so we could only bask in its glory when he was away with one of his friends. My brother played the very first and original Command & Conquer, while I spent my time beating Dark Forces over and over again or Doom 2. We totally abandoned our SNES after that as it felt like there was nothing better. At around the time of christmas, I think I had an idea that my dad was getting another computer for me and my little brother to share, but when the day finally hit us I had never expected to get a computer for each of us. The thing was my uncle who owned a computer shop at the time, was able to get a bargain with those machines, though I still admit we were spoiled. They were intel 486's and neither of us couldn't be anymore excited, we even each got a game to pick out at the closes Media Play when those were still around. I had picked out Lucasarts Archive Vol II, which was the Star Wars collection, and my brother got C&C: Red Alert. My brother and I become mindless slaves to those machines, hour upon hour of Tie Fighter I played. Good times.

Christmas of 1999. My brother and I got matching Dell XPS T-500's, which were Pentium 3 systems, as well as a copy of Half-Life to share.

My parents usually didn't get us games, because they thought that was too predictable. So they'd get us TVs or an all-in-one stereo system or something, then clothes and some novelty gifts, maybe 1 or 2 games. Then we'd use Christmas money to buy more games.

I generally never got a whole lot for Christmas most years.  My family never had a lot of money, and I was always hard to buy for on top of that.

I actually can't remember ever getting anything from family as far as gaming stuff goes on Christmas, really.  My father in law tries sometimes.  He got me Fable 2 last year, and I think my mother in law got me something a long time ago.  Most people don't try, though.

The one story I have I think was my birthday rather than Christmas, and I've probably told it before... but it's a nice story.  My mom was paranoid about games back in the day, and when I got the original Legend of Zelda on NES as a birthday gift one year, she took it away from me after everyone went home because she didn't like it for some weird reason.  She eventually came to her senses about such things, and I always gave her a hard time about it... but one year for my birthday, to make up for it, she got me Wind Waker.  Not only that, she did the preorder deal where you also got Ocarina of Time for Gamecube as well as a bonus disc.  I was totally surprised and I treasure those games for that reason alone.  Definitely the best gaming gifts I've ever gotten.

When I was 3 and my brother was 7 I was asked by my dad (while he was filming us) what I wanted for Christmas, and my brother whispers in my ear "Q-Bert" and that's what I said I wanted. It's all on film and quite funny.

I was an adult by the time videogames came home.  So I don't have such happy childhood Christmas memories.  Nearly all Christmas-time gaming presents have been from me to me.  One that sticks out in my mind is the N64 with Mario 64, the year it launched.  I got it in November, though.  No, I couldn't wait till Christmas to try it out either.  Heheh!

I never got a console for Christmas.  I generally get a game or two every year, but never a console.  I do remember quite vividly getting my NES though.  It was 1989.  By that time pretty much all my friends had one.  My parents considered it too expensive at the time.  I had just gotten out for Summer vacation, and Mom knew I really had wanted one for a long time.  She had quit smoking at the time and put back all the money she would have spent on cigarettes.  She took that money down to a local furniture store in my hometown (small town, it was literally the only place that sold NES stuff) and got me the NES that came with Mario and Duck Hunt.  For the next week I only left my bedroom to use the bathroom, shower, or fix a quick sandwich.

Then of course just a few years later I would be crushed by the knowledge that the SNES release was impending, and that my friends were yet again moving on.

I've had a lot of good gaming X-Mas's, so I really dunno what is the most memorable to me...

I've had a few of those moments in my youth. Those are feelings you can never replicate. Well, unless you buy a Ferrari.
