so I'm posting from my phone.  The browser is kind of really crap, but... eh.  It works, and I can finally check the boards from work! woot!  Que on a fucking cell phone... what's the world coming to?  Just for the record, I do hate myself.

I don't know what kind of phone you have or what browser it uses, but when I view theses boards from my BlackBerry, it gives it this nice simple layout.  When I post from there my posts have a little phone icon instead of the paper icon.

I'm actually pretty impressed by the wireless view of these boards.  I visit the Bengals forums all the time too.  They use VBulletin and it must not have a wireless view because it's just the same as viewing on a computer and it sucks on a phone.

See if you can put Opera Mini on it. I did that for my PSP (thanks to some homebrew stuff) and it ended up being a decent browser.

I actually dislike phone browsers that try to recreate a desktop-like browsing experience.  I much prefer the ones that sites detect as a phone device and give you a "mobile" layout instead of the normal one.  It's usually much easier and faster to navigate.

Opera Mini on the BlackBerry does the opposite of that.

Yeah, I can imagine that sucking on a phone screen. Worked ok for the PSP since its fairly large and wide.

What phone are you using, Que?

Also I didn't know these boards had a mobile version. WAP? What's the url tag?

Fuck this phone.

EDIT - That was a test.  Something's weird with this thing.  I'll have to spend some time figuring it out... it certainly isn't as easy as it should be.  Lots of nonsensical shit going on.

Anyways, the forums don't regonize Opera in mobile mode when I turn it on...everything else does. When I load in either WAP format it appears quite a bit different than it does inder IE Mobile...which seems to be a weird mobile-desktop hybred render (all pics and everything, but simplified layout and loads very fast). Shame because it seems like the best rendering option yet IE Mobile sucks hard.

Could have sworn I made a post here last night saying more stuff.  Now I can't remember.

Anyway, it's an LG Rumor.  Not the best phone in the world... I'm generally unimpressed with it considering it costs like $400 or something.  Can't imagine why.  It's the nicest phone I've had, though, and I got it for free of course.

I see the WAP2 one on my BB, except there is no white space between the lines.

Whacked.  Actually, it doesn't even see IE as a mobile browser, it's just that IE doesn't render it properly at all so it looks all fucked. And yeah, like I said Opera is set to "identify as a mobile device" and still gets the full site unless I add the WAP tag.  Oh well, I actually don't mind that at all.  It's easy enough to navigate with a touch screen and it renders fast enough anyways.

Yeah, phone pricing is very very messed up.  A lot of times it doesn't seem to make much sense.  Anyways, the Rumour should be able to run Opera Mini.  Sprint?
And I give it 6 months to a year before you cave and get a smart phone.

If I end up sticking with this data shit, that could well be the case.  I mainly did it for the unlimited messaging and email stuff because Sprint (you were right) gives me a 20% discount monthly because I work for local government here.  Otherwise there is no fucking way in hell I'd be paying for this stuff without having a smart phone (and there's probably no way I'd be paying for it even with one since I really don't see myself using it that much).

Yeah, after having a BB Pearl, Motorola Qm (piece of shit), and then BB Curve, I just can't see myself ever going back to a regular cell phone.  Even one of those things like the Samsung Alias wouldn't be enough.  I'm hoping to get a Droid soon or a Nexus One when it supports Verizon.

I think you'd find that if you had a smartphone you'd use it a lot more than you think - especially if you're catching transit.  Streaming radio and video can be huge for killing time.

I use mine all the time, but don't use all that much data at all because I generally don't stream anything (well, maybe 5 min a day on average).  A lot of that is because I don't catch the bus or anything like that, and also because I already have two ipods I use to listen to music.  Also (and this is a huge bitch) my Omnia doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack.  It has a Blade jack for everything and an adapter I can use for headphones on that. Not a huge deal, but something which just makes it a little more of a bitch to use when I could just ipod most of my shit.  DivX support is awesome though, and if I ever have 30 min or so to kill while waiting, I'll hook the sound up to my car speakers and watch perfect quality movies.

All that aside, I'd have a hard time going back because I've gotten so used to the benefits of a smartphone like syncing scheduling software, MS office support, and...well, a ton of other shit.

Both those look sweet.  The thing that sucks about smartphones is that everytime a new one comes out I pretty much want it. If you're looking at a Nexus One, however, I'd see if you could play around with one first.  A lot of people have trouble switching to a touchscreen only phone - typing can be a bitch at first.

Yeah, I don't catch transit.  Pure car commute at this point.  And even if I did, I never need to kill time.  Free time of that kind is spent studying.  I don't even do shit on my lunch breaks at work.  Just study.  Well, at least when I can mentally handle it.  If I can't, chances are I'm exhausted and sleeping in my car.

Wow, okay, the Opera mini browser is so much better than what came on this piece of garbage.  The text entry is still non-standard though.  I still have to hit shift multiple times for caps, and I actually  have to bounce out to a menu just to type a comma since this thing won't recognize it as anythuing but an apostrophe (as though I really need 2 of those).  Anyway... it beats the alternative.  Now let's just see if it even posts.

scott, if you're going to get a nexus one, i suggest importing. for some weird reason (patents?) the nexus one doesn't have multitouch support in the US - which i'm guessing would make typing a real bitch. good to see someone else going android though, i've had the htc hero since release and i still absolutely love the thing.

My resistive touch screen doesn't have multi touch, and typing isn't bad at all, but you have to go about it differently than a capacitive screen. If you haven't gotten used to multi-touch typing, you probably won't have a problem (above getting used to typing on any touch screen), but if you have you're certainly going to have to readjust.

It's also fucked about the lack of multi-touch support.  The Droid had the same thing, but the Milestone (international version of the Droid), is multi-touch.  No one has come out and blatently said either are due to a patent....but something is fucking up.  That said, it's just stupid to make a capacitive screen without multi-touch.

Does anyone have any idea why Opera mini decides to work for a while, then install itself again?  It'll work fine for hours, then suddenly the next time I load it, it reinstalls itself and overwrites all of the settings and bookmarks I've put into it.  I don't get it.

Yeah, can't say.  I use Opera Mobile.  There are literally dozens of sites dedicated to phones out there, with very busy boards, so I'd imagine you wouldn't have trouble finding a fix.

I haven't had that happen, but on my old BB Pearl I had Opera Mini break several times where I would have to use the Desktop Manager to delete it and then reinstall it.

read somewhere that it does better if you use the proper exit feature instead of the drop call button.  Dunno if that's true, but either that or the fact that I switched to beta 2 of Opera mini 5 seems to have helped.  we'll see as the day goes.  this new version is boss, though.  heads and tails over 4.

Do you guys know whether or not it's possible to get East Asian character support on an LG Rumor (LX260)?  I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find this information floating around the internet.

I tried out Opera Mini 5 beta on my Curve 8330 and I hate it.  I hate how it's "mouse" driven and wants to render the page normally and even the mobile mode blows.  I much prefer the BlackBerry browser how rolling the ball scrolls up and down and between the links rather than trying to move the cursor over something I want to click on.  Opera Mini 5 also runs incredibly slow on my phone.

People seem to want all this fancy stuff on mobile browsers, but I'm the opposite.  I want something very simplistic that makes it quick to load pages and easy to move between clickable links and buttons.

I'd generally agree, though I think Opera mini is fine.  I'd really just like support for Chinese/Japanese/Korean.  Beyond that I don't need much.

For any phone specific questions, I'd really ask here;

http://www.howardforums.com/

It's an obscure question for sure, but if anyone knows I'd imagine they'd either be in the Sprint or LG forum.

The problem most people have with RIM's browser is you often don't get the choice at all (unless they updated it).  The Blackberry browser is usually regarded as hands down the worst mobile browser (maybe excluding IE mobile), and they really need to update it. The thing is, other mobile browsers aren't made with blackberries in mind at all.  Opera Mobile is very intuitive on a touchscreen although I couldn't imagine using it otherwise.

I don't know if it's the data compression or what, but the browsing experience on blackberries is usually pointed out as their biggest drawback - something RIM should probably get on top of (unless they have in the last few months). I have, however started noticing that Opera Mobile (different than mini), won't always report as a handheld device correctly.  Not that big of a deal since the EVDO and Omnia combination loads MOST pages quickly, but I could see it being a huge bitch.

I've heard that, but it is still my favorite.  I wouldn't mind Opera Mini as much if it would tell sites (like OW.net) to use the mobile version of themselves instead of trying to render the normal desktop page in some sort of "mobile" layout.

Yeah, actually since you brought that up I've noticed that it reports it's status wrong to a lot more sites than I thought. Huge fucking bitch since I've noticed my internet slow down quite a bit over the last couple weeks.  The thing I don't get is why some sites get it right when I set it to report as a mobile device.  I mean, you'd think it was an all or nothing sort of thing....
