Anyone ever take a road trip around the US?
« on: Sunday, February 07, 2010, 06:58:35 PM »
I'm thinking taking a road trip this summer. Just thinking of taking two weeks off and driving around the country to check out some sites. Grand canyon, Yosemite, yellowstone, maybe take a drive up the pacific highway. See some of Oregon, and Washington.

I'm just curious to know if anyone has every done it? Did you spend a ton of money? Did you have a good time?

I think the closest I've done is driving from Chicago to West Glacier, MT. We took our time and visited some sights along the way, and it was pretty great. That drive took us 4 days, though we spent almost one entire day in Nebraska visiting places. Just stop at a rest stop and pick up those flyer things that shows whats around.

Yeah, this is going to require some planning. It's either this or another cruise. I think both would be awesome. I'm not to excited about driving for 5 or 6 hours a day though.

It's still in the idea phase though.

I'd love to if I had more time, but I've never done it.  Julia did when she and her folks moved here to Cali from Connecticut, though.  They had a pretty good time from what I understand.

I haven't done the entire US, but I've done down the West Coast to San Diego, into Arizona, all through Nevada, back up through Idaho because some asshole in Nevada said it was the best shortcut ever (I still think he lied), back through eastern Oregon and Washington and back into BC.  I've also just driven down the West Coast a few more times, targeting Vegas or California.

The drive is always pretty fun, and you have to hit the Pacific Coast Highway up for sure, just make sure you do it in the day.  Also, make sure you avoid LA anywhere near rush hour.  Like blow through or into that motherfucker late at night or bang on mid day.  Nothing worse than being on a road trip and all of a sudden hitting gridlock.

With good company and good music the drive is the best part about a road trip.

I haven't done a "road trip around the U.S.", per se.  But with my family we did have a couple two-week vacations where we hit up a bunch of places.  Once we went and visited various cities and places of interest in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.  Another time we went West and visited Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

The states I have never been in at any point are Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Rhode Island.

You are not missing shit with Idaho....seriously. I was actually amazed because I had no idea where it is on a map and BAM! I was in it.  There's good reason I didn't know anything about it....

Washington is alright, but for me it's just like home so there's not much I can say.  Oregon has a nice coast and some pretty sweet little towns on the beach (and kites!).  But by far the best two things in Oregon are; 1.) super cheap booze and 2.) sand dunes.

I haven't done any as an adult but with the family I've driven through most of the fifty states. Now that I'm older I want to do it again.

I got a couple books from the library on doing this. I think I may start to plan it. I really want to see some of the big national parks and drive the pacific coast highway. I think that camping might be a good option to avoid the cost of hotels and such. Only maybe stay at those goofy gimmicky places. Like one of those teepee hotel places.

Have to figure out the transportation part though. My car is starting to nickle and dime me to death.

Yeah I've seen all kinds of national landmarks:  Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Devil's Tower, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, the Liberty Bell, all the stuff in Washington D.C., the U.S.S. Constitution, the list goes on.

I think my favorite national park I've been to is the Grand Tetons.  Side note:  that basically means "big tits".  It's pretty striking.  You have this big flat plain and then some giant ass mountains suddenly rise up after that.  And Jackson Hole is by that, which is a pretty unique place.  There is a bar there that has silver dollars underneath glass for the bar and the stools are saddles.
