Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Hmmm...
Quote
But for this downloadable game, the focus falls less on story and more on uncomplicated gameplay. As the point totals erupting from dead enemies suggest, this is a game with one foot in the 1980s. Beyond that, there's also the fixed isometric camera angle. Moving through Central American jungles and temples, you'll always see the action from the same semi-top-down perspective. This keeps the focus squarely on the torrent of enemies capable of swarming you at any given moment. It's a set-up that leads fast-paced yet simple combat: point your weapons at the things you want to die, shoot, and repeat. It's hard to draw any clear comparisons due to the fact that we weren't able to play the game, but the combat definitely gave off a retro, where-did-I-put-that-quarter kind of a feel.
I guess "Gauntlet: starring Lara Croft" would have been too obvious.

It doesn't look bad, but man they seem to think cramming more combat into the Tomb Raider series will make it better. Though maybe thats why this one doesn't have the TR name on it.

EDIT
haha, I guessed right. Scrolled down to the comments:

Hi all, it's Keir from Eidos and Crystal here. Just to emphasise, this isn't Tomb Raider (Crystal are currently working on TWO games) Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is something new and different and full of win.

Dear Crystal Dynamics,

Stop fucking around.  It's about time for a new Kain game.

Thank you.

Then I might be interested, but usually when they make announcements like this and they say they are going to "decide" if they will use other digital distribution channels...the decision is always a "No."

Kind of strange too. Its like only selling games at Walmart. Why do that? I can see Valve games with Steam, and Stardock games with Impulse since they have their own interests in it. But what is with these 3rd parties deciding to only sell via one online store?

I'm guessing most of it is the DRM.  With other stores they have to use other DRM schemes, possibly several.

Except Steam DRM is already broken. They might be able to prevent 0day, but as soon as its released it fair game.

I'm not saying anything about that, what I'm saying is they might need to put on x DRM for store A and y DRM for store B and z DRM for store C.  Since most publishers outsource their DRM solution, they have to pay for all of that.

It isn't like that with retail stores.  They just give out the same copies unless the retail store comes up with some special exclusive bundle or edition, but then it's the publisher pulling in extra money and not some third party or the retail outlet.  Your analogy doesn't fit as neatly as you might think.

Except they wouldn't actually have to do that. By using Steam as your DRM they are locking themselves into Steam. Notice how a lot of Steam games also have SecuROM on top of Steams own protections? The games that are sold at Impulse feature the same. They don't have to come up with new DRM for every store. Unless of course they go with Steams stuff, then they would have to rip it out and replace it to sell it elsewhere...which is why I'm fairly certain you wont see this particular game anywhere else.

D2D has their own limited activation DRM brew; Impulse has their own DRM brew; Steam has Steamworks DRM; G4WL has their own DRM brew; etc etc.

How annoying must that be for a dev. to patch a game from say 1.00 to 1.01 - and then have a different EXE for each damn digital distributor. No wonder THQ here is using just Steamworks only here.

Well, there are unseen forces at work that are leading publishers to these decisions.  My guess is the cost of the DRM itself is a factor, with Steamworks possibly being very inexpensive.  And you have to consider Steam's userbase, which is easily the largest of the online retailers.  If a publisher has choices such as 1) pay more for SecuROM, but open up the ability to sell it in more online stores and 2) pay less for Steamworks and be satisfied with Steam's sizable userbase, they may decide that the numbers favor option 2 because the cost to hit that extra (smallish) % of the market might exceed the expected gains.

Look, I have no idea what these things cost and I'm just speculating here.  All I'm saying is that it's not as simple as you want to boil it down to.  There is a reason or are reasons that lead publishers to make the decision they are making and it isn't just "we are purposely screwing the anti-Steam crowd" or "we're to lazy to deal with more than one party".

Though, Steam's got the biggest market on the digital marketplace, keep in mind - like it or not; over 70%, Brad Wardell thinks. If you want to sell your game, that definitely is the place to sell it and make money - but, you must use Steam's DRM; that's the Valve rule.

Really, though - if I went out and bought Torchlight at retail store on disc (which has NO DRM, I should note), I do feel I should ALSO be allowed to be given the option to turn it into the Steam version for no extra charge. Some retail version games do allow that - such as UT3, X3: Terran Conflict, and Dark Messiah. I'd guess the dev's that sell a retail version on DVD and allow you to use the disc DRM (if there is one) only to avoid Steam OR upload your game key to Steam probably have to pay Valve a fair chunk of change so they can do so. I really do like Steam's in-game Shift-Tab overlay and Friends Tool features...

I do agree that sometimes things appear illogical to us, and we assume the suits are idiots when things aren't as simple as they appear.

For example, I remember there were a few games that were coming out to Windows Vista only, and demanding DX10... and we we were all thinking the publishers were fools to ignore their Win XP user base.

Turns out, one of those developers was on the PCG podcast recently (yes developer, not publisher). He basically talked about why they had stuck with Vista instead of going with XP as well.

He said that basically it wasn't cost effective. Apparently it is significantly cheaper to develop games in DX10, and he said that it would have cost them a lot of money to port the game to XP, which would have required a number of extra copies to be sold that the market research team felt was unlikely to happen even if the game had come to XP as well.

Anyway, I don't know if the guy was bullshitting, but that's what he said anyway.

I know they have their reasons (all of them involve money), I just hate seeing games I am interested in going to pretty much the only service I despise. I'd like to see something bad happen to Steam just so people (publishers and gamers alike) can see that putting all your eggs in one basket probably isn't the best idea in the world.

I think it's up to Valve to patch out the DRM and the 3rd party developers/publishers to take care of the DRM issue - especially as many of us here having constantly growing Steam Games List. If not, there's gonna be hell to pay...likely in some sort of a legal battle. And if they won't help us, you can bet damn sure hackers will do something about this...

Personally, I think a law should be made - that games after being on the market for a while w/ DRM should automatically be removed PERIOD - especially games that are being no longer patched and SP games. Once a game hits that $20 or less bin - it's ran its cycle and likely hackers and pirates are going after the next new $60 game...

I was just reading someone sing praises about this game and it reminded me about how I need to buy it. It really does seem like a lot of fun. It's got some of the level traversal stuff in there, a little bit of the puzzle elements, but it's all put into an isometric Diablo-esque view with twin stick shooter type action. The game is designed for coop, so you might have to have the guy (Totec?) throw his spear at a wall, have Lara use it as a platform, then she can pull him up with her rope. In single player though, she can throw the spear, so the levels still work.

The only reason I haven't bought this game is because I have a friend who wants to play through it with me, and there's currently no online coop. It's supposed to be coming in a patch on Sep. 28th, so I'll worry about it then. I didn't want to burn out on it before the online coop was put into it.

Shacknews -> Lara Croft And The Guardian of Light for PC and PS3 will NOT come equipped w/ Co-Op.

What? Wow.

I still don't understand how this happened. The game is designed for coop, wouldn't coop working be second in importance only to it running in a playable fashion?

Oh yeah, W7re, when I added the code I got "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Demo Beta successfully activated" so I figured it must be the beta. It's a 2.8GB download, so I figure it's the full game with demo access until you purchase it.

That is pretty weird. I read that the Xbox Live version didn't have online co-op but it was added (or will be added) in an update.

I hope they mean that it won't be released with coop but will have it added later, coz otherwise that's ridiculous.

EDIT:
Ah ok, now that I've read the article they did mean that online co-op will come "at a later date."

Yea, XBL online coop is supposed to be added. In a week (sept 28th) from what I've heard. It's already got same system coop, but I have a friend in California who wants to play it and I'm in North Carolina. Need online coop.

Ok, interesting little tidbit.. The game is listed as available for pre-purchase on Steam as of Sept 21st. The activation code from Gamespot doesn't just give you early access to the demo, it actually gives you access to the full game if you've already pre-purchased. The official activation date is supposed to be Sept 28th.

Pre-purchase also gives you a free copy of TR: Legend, which is advertised as "giftable," exact quote "Pre-purchase now and receive a free, giftable copy of Tomb Raider: Legend and start playing it now!"

So yeah, it's pretty cool so far. A fun game and I can confirm that the PC version does have local co-op if a controller is plugged in.

Well it's looking like coop patch may not be coming out next week like it's supposed to. According to this it may be delayed and both the PC and PSN releases won't have it either. Sucks, I was thinking about giving it a go when the coop was patched in.

This game is pretty good.  Great control and lots to accomplish in varied ways.  It stands up well as a single-player game, and I'm glad, since I will probably never get to see the co-op.  I got through it once on Normal, and enjoyed most of it.  There are a few issues with the fixed perspective, nothing too maddening.  My bigger problem is with the fixed length of Lara's jumps.  Stick pressure, length of button press and speed before jumping all seem to have no effect on the jump.  As a result, some attempts at creative climbing end up in frustrating leaps over walls into bottomless death.  Another problem is the lack of weapon slots.  There are 4.  One has to be for the spear.  You need it; it's that simple.  And unless I'm missing something, you need the original pistols too, since they don't need or deplete the blue ammo bar.  I deplete that in a hurry with all the other shooters.  That leaves a grand total of 2 slots for other weapons, and there are a ton of them by game's end.  I settled on a grenade launcher and a high-power assault rifle, switching one of these out for something else (like a rocket launcher) when the situation calls for it.  I suppose I could fall back on the spear as the only default weapon when ammo runs out, but I find the pistols more useful, particularly with boosts from relics.

I haven't had a chance yet to replay single levels or the whole game, so I'll reserve comment on replay value.  That's key to my final assessment of the game for the money, which comes up short if a single playthrough is all it really has to offer me.

I've played it on local coop and it is pretty awesome. There are some subtle differences between singleplayer and multiplayer in terms of layout and puzzles, you have to cooperate in order to progress, I like it.

This game really is worth the asking price.  You get a wealth of replayability, old-school style.  Everything you unlock you get to keep for replaying any of the levels, or the whole game.  The more you get, the more you can accomplish.  Your overall score reflects your best performance per level, so you're not stuck having to replay the whole thing from beginning to end to up that.  The same is true of your best times.  Playing for top score is a very different experience than playing for shortest time.  As you gain experience with the controls, the whole thing just opens up, and it's quite engrossing.  Good job, Crystal Dynamics.

Yeah, that seems to be a bug. No matter how many people are searching for one another you'll never find anyone to play with.

The only way so far seems to be by inviting a friend to join your game. My experience with it was terrible, from a technical network standpoint: lag up the wazoo, random disconnections, out of sync, etc.
