Blur - like Mario Kart with licensed cars
« on: Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 10:27:07 PM »
I'm not usually into racing games, but this one looks interesting. It's got graphics in the style you'd expect from most racing games, but with the powerup system from Mario Kart, and an unlock system similar to Modern Warfare. It's being made by Bizarre Creations, who made Project Gotham Racing, Geometry Wars, and The Club.

Here's some footage someone took from the beta.

There's an Xbox multiplayer beta going on, and Escapist Magazine has like 1000 keys to give away. First come, first serve. You'll have to sign up with Escapist and make an Activision account. You also need Xbox Live Gold to play the beta. To make things as simple as possible, here's what you do to get in:

1. Go to this page on escapistmagazine.com and sign in/create an account
2. Once singed in, get back to that page (use the same link again if you have to) and you should see "Thank You! Your game key is: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX"
3. In a new tab/browser window, go to this link on blurgame.com
4. Sign up/sign in and put in the game key from step 2.
5. Once you get to where it's offering you a 48 hour XBLA trial, either go to your profile from the link on that page, or go to the link in step 3 again.
6. Use the 25 digit activation code on the Live Marketplace website, or on your Xbox to start the beta download.

Actually that does look really awesome, I love Mario Kart style arcade racing. I'm not into the whole 2 Fast 2 Furious car racing scene, but it does sport some really cool effects with the weapons and stuff.

After playing the beta a bit, I doubt I'd buy the game at full price. I would, however, actually buy it. That's more than I can say for most racing games. I'm not into racing games much at all, and I'm not into cars at all.

I got an email with 3 extra codes, so if escapist runs out and someone still wants one, let me know.

Oops, I forgot completely. The Blur website even offers you a 48 hour gold key, which lets you know you need Gold. Though I guess if you wanted, you could use that to just try it for 48 hours.

damn it! redeemed my code, entered it in on the 360, accidentally hit cancel - now i can't download because the code has already been redeemed! aaargh!

if you've still got a spare code, send it this way, will you?

edit - eheheh... just found the recently downloaded list from the guide menu, don't need that code now, panic over!  ::)

I see Blur PC is $21.99 on Amazon...

So, guys - is this racer any good? Anyone played this yet?

EDIT:
Looks like there's a $20 off manufacturer's coupon you can print and use from the official website, which is good until 6/30/2010 for any version of Blur (PS3, PC, or 360) in brick and mortar retail stores only (if they'll actually accept it).

Nice thread on CAG about this all, too.

Yeah, this is well implemented.  As soon as you buy something or use a code to get it, you "have" it, even before downloading it.  It will let you download anytime after that if you need to.

I saw a commercial for this game, making fun of Mario Kart.  Off to youtube . . .

Never disappoints.

Yeah, that part stinks...hehe.
$21.99 is cheap for a game barely out a month - it's as if Amazon saw the coupon, realized it can't be used online, and decided to match it close to what the price would be after the coupon if it could've been used there, pretty much.

I still got my $10 coupon from Amazon to use (b/c I bought Bioshock 2 PC during the extra $10 coupon sale) that I have to use until end of July comes, too...

From what I'm reading on CAG, rumor has it, there's going to be a Best Buy RZ coupon starting 6/20 for Blur that will give an extra $10 off to any version of Blur. If it's true about the RZ coupon, I'll confirm it and let y'all know in this thread.

If the RZ coupon rumor is true - I don't know if the RZ coupon will be stackable w/ the manufacturer's coupon, though...YMMV.

EDIT:
At Best Buy....
Blur for console versions for PS3 and X360 (sale price) is $39.99 this week.
Blur PC is $39.99 regularly at BB.

So, if they accept the $20 manufacturer's coupon, it'll be $20.

EDIT 2:
An Extra $10 BB Reward Zone coupon is up for Blur.
That coupon is only for PS3 and X360 versions, though.

No clue if it'll stack w/ the $20 manufacturer's coupon, for you console gamers...
So, if you want to try to stack this $20 off and BB $10 off coupon at BB, be warned - YMMV.
