Time for football!
« on: Wednesday, September 08, 2010, 07:59:04 PM »
This is my favorite time in the sports year.  Football starts tomorrow, there needs to be a topic for it.  I'm from Boston, so of course I'll be rooting for Brady and the Pats in a borderline man-love fashion.  Say what you will about the Pats, but this year most aren't even picking us over the Jets.  The fuckin JETS.  Mark Sanchez!  This year's Hard Knocks was entertaining as hell, but it really didn't make me think the Jets were a team to fear.  The Pats are the team to beat in the AFC East.

I know scott is a Bengals fan, and the Pats and Bengals meet on Sunday for Game 1  I'm sure you have thoughts on this game.

I'll admit I'm very worried about the Pats defense.  Our run game is weak and our O-line is down to third stringers in more than one spot.  Please don't get Brady killed... Our cornerbacks are rookies and Randy Moss is acting like a diva again.  No matter what the media says, Welker is not 100%, he can't be.  I haven't seen the Bengals play this preseason yet, so when I say I think the Pats will win it's solely based on the fact that I think our passing game will be among the best in the league this year.  6'6" rookie TE Rob Gronkowski will be big in the redzone.  I will say I like the Bengals a lot.  Ochocinco is one of my favorite players outside of NE, he seems like a great dude in real life and his jokes are always hilarious and good-natured.  I think TO will be big this year too.  How was he supposed to do anything in Buffalo?  I think it'll be a close game, and one of the better ones this season.  Last year's opener against Buffalo with the last minute TD drive by Brady for the win was awesome, but I want to see it against actual competition.

What teams are the rest of you betting the house on?

Pats with the win!  Man, I love Tom Brady but someones gotta cut his fucking hair he looks like a jackass.  Pat Chung was a second-round pick for us a couple years ago I believe, and he looked FIERCE out there today, especially after we lost Leigh Bodden to injury.  The guy had like 8 tackles before the second half.

Offense looked great, but I'm still not completely sold because Bengals D just looked sloppy. Once their O started to click in the second half, I immediately thought of all the second-half troubles the Pats had last year.  Gotta say, Bengals rookie Jermaine Gresham stood out though, I think he's got big potential.

I find it hard to believe that nobody here is big into football.  Man, I can't get enough...

Oh man our D stunk up the joint today.  To think we were the #4 ranked unit last year.  I mean I know it's the Patriots, but come on, we aren't that bad.

Carson played pretty bad.  He seemed to play a lot better in the 2nd half, but he made a lot of questionable throws.

Our D did suck today. It was kind of pissing me off watching that first half. We'll see how it goes. We'll steamroll the ravens next week...

I was actually going to make this topic, but I thought no one else was into football here. I didn't watch the Pats/Bengals (mostly because I didn't care), but it was a blowout for so long that it didn't seem interesting. I'm in the NFC East, so I was more concerned about the competitions. The Giants didn't look too good, they only won because Matt Moore...well he sucks. I had a blast watching the Eagles get their asses handed to them and the failure of their new QB (who they apparently are going to stick with).

Most of all I watched the Skins beat the Cowboys. The Skins weren't as impressive as I would've hoped, but were basically a brand new team. The Cowboys looked like shit and they're destined to win the Super Bowl this year?

Yeah Cowboys might be in trouble.  Washington didn't look amazing though, and if not for two bonehead plays by Dallas, Washington takes a loss.

Titans really impressed me.  Vince Young made plays when he could, threw it away when he couldn't.  CJ had an impressive run, but VY was the one that really really impressed me.  He made very sound decisions and his maturity is starting to show.  There's talk of Haynesworth being traded back to the Titans, but after seeing that line in action yesterday I don't think they need him.

Bengals should be ashamed of themselves.  So should the Niners.  I had high hopes for them this year, but a rebuilding Hawks team just handed them their asses.

Watching MNF Joe Flacco is mediocre as always.  Why does the media suck him off so hard?  It's ridiculous.  With their personnel on offense, the Ravens should be rolling.  Imagine Tom Brady or Peyton Manning with this crew...

I was more amazed at how much the Jets offense sucked it up tonight.  Ray laid a helluva hit on Keller there toward the end of the game.

And yeah, that Johnson no catch was bullshit.

The Jets are completely overrated team that is only saved by it's defense. They squeaked into the playoffs last year because the Colts already made it in and lost playing their 2nd and third stringers.

If the Panthers win a single game this year it will be a miracle. I don't know what I just witnessed but it wasn't a football game - that was awful awful awful awful.

Yeah, at least I have solace in the fact that I'm not a Panthers or Rams fan.  But not much solace.  We let Tampa Bay - Tampa fucking Bay! - score 10 points in less than two minutes.

The offense is not playing well at all.  The offensive line is mediocre, but Carson has to shoulder at least half the blame at this point.

I had to work on Sunday (it was pretty slow, so I still got to watch most of the game), but I got 3 out of 4 picks right. My Redskins looked like ass, but still came out to win it on OT against a "super bowl" caliber team like Green Bay. Cowboys lost, so that also makes me happy.

Superbowl: Pats-Saints

I went to the Halloween game Vikings@Patriots when Moss made his return.  What a fucking awesome time.  Even cooler, I hung out with Tully Banta-Cain, Rob Gronkowski, and Alge Crumpler at a bar right after the game.  My girl knows some kid who was roomates with Gronks cousin or some shit and we met them after the game.  But yeah, I can't believe how good they're doing right now.  Of course I could nitpick all day about what they could do better, but with them at 11-2 I'd just sound like another spoiled whiny asshole NE fan.  Brady is playing like I never thought I'd see again after his injury, and I was almost about to buy into all the Peyton hype from last year.

I don't know if you guys are even watching football right now, being Cinci and Carolina fans.  Cincinatti is a team I like to watch/root for when the Pats aren't playing, and of the three games I caught (all losses) I was screaming at my TV on more than one occasion -- and I'm not from anywhere near Ohio.  Shits rough.  I'm not sure how they'll even begin to, but here's hoping they can fix their problems for next year.

The Panthers?  Maybe they'll hit big on the draft?

Skins are hurting to a slightly lesser degree, but this is another team I like.  One thing I'll never be able to reasonably explain is why I like watching Donovan McNabb play.  Especially frustrating this year, but I still find myself tuning in to see.

And how can you hate the Cowboys?

I think the Bengals organization is going to fall into another 90's like Dark Era.  Marvin Lewis is most likely gone after this year.  He's pretty much shown that the best he can muster with good talent is what you've seen since 2003.  I'm ready to part with him, but what worries me is that we don't have a good history of picking (or luring) good coaches since Mike Brown took over as owner.  With the organization seemingly falling into disarray again, I don't know if they could bring a good coach in even if they wanted to.

Most likely, they will try to promote Mike Zimmer (the defensive coordinator).  I like the guy.  He took an absolutely terrible defense and made it into a solid unit, even reaching as high as #4 overall last year.  However, what the hell happened this year with the defense?  They suck!  Sure, we are pretty banged up on defense, but even when we had everybody we were doing terrible.  There is none of the ferocity there was last year and that's a big reason we're 2-11.

Chad's contract is up after this year, but we have an option for next year.  Don't know what will happen with that.  I imagine he'll want out.  T.O. is on a one-year contract.  Don't think we'll be bringing him back.  Cedric Benson has been a bright spot the last couple of years, but I think he'll want out and he's due after this year for a new contract.

It's a mess.  Knowing the Bengals, it's going to get a lot uglier that it is now before it gets better.  If this was the Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, or Broncos, I would trust the organization to fix itself rather quickly.  But this is the Mike Brown Bengals.  Not just known for mediocrity, but being abysmal.  And being cheap and stubborn to boot.  I'm looking at a 90's era situation where we can't attract any free agents except those that are on the downside of their careers or nobodies.

What the hell?  The Bengals actually looked like an NFL team today.  Where was this all year?

I have to say that its interesting that Chad and T.O. weren't playing and the offense played much better than they have all year.  I wonder if that's because that the receivers we had in are better blockers and were actually running the routes they are supposed to.

I still don't know why anyone would want Chad or T.O. They have talent, but they have massive fucking egos that are just horrible for team cohesion. I would take a hard-working receiver from the practice squad that shows promise over one of those guys any day - at least the team will respect them.

Also: my team is worst in the the NFL baby! I'm actually impressed whenever we manage to get a first down. It's quite an accomplishment for us.

The Pats look good, and don't get me wrong - Brady is one of the top 3 quarterbacks in the NFL. He's certainly not the reason that they will lose in the playoffs.

I'd also like to say that, while I respect his ability to throw a football, I would love to punch him in his smug little face. Really fucking hard.

You know, everyone likes to rag on the Bengals for being the Bungles, especially after a five-turnover debacle like what happened today against the Ravens.  But why aren't people talking about how the Ravens only managed to score 13 points when they had those five gifts?  The Ravens, and especially Joe Flacco, are constantly overrated.  Maybe it's just my perception because the Bengals match up to them well.  We always manage to make their offense look terrible when we play them.

Looks like we'll know by the end of the day whether or not Fish stays in Tennessee.  I hope he does, personally.  But there's been more momentum in the "fire him" category by the fans this year than there's ever been.

I could go on and on about how much I think VY is at fault for the Titan's woes.  His stats speak otherwise though.  He's not a leader, and he's been given far too much time to develop into one.  His stats look good, but are really pedestrian numbers when you break it down.

I'm not really a Titans fan so ultimately I suppose it doesn't concern me too much.  Just an interesting situation.

W.... T.... F....  Word on the street is the Bengals coaching staff is going to remain entirely intact except for the linebackers coach.  What?  How?  Huh?

Fans have been begging for Bob Bratkowski (the offensive coordinator) to be let go for years, even years when the Bengals had a semblance of a working offense.  Now they go 4-12, appear to have an offense thoroughly figured out by defensive coordinators and they are going to keep this loser?  Hell I want all the coaches gone except some of the defensive coaches, but this is the worst.  But then again, Mike Brown has never been known to be a savvy football owner.

Wow.  It is unreal that the Seahawks beat the Saints last night.  It's embarrassing to be a Bengals fan much of the time, but that performance by the Saints was horrible.  First of all, when a division winner has a losing record that is just absurd and means that every team in the division flat out sucks.  Secondly, how can you not tackle Lynch on that run?  Amazing.

This Steelers/Jets game... I'm so conflicted.  As an unfortunate Bengals fan, I loathe the Steelers and the last thing I want is Steelers fans going on about 7 titles or yet another SB appearance.  Then again, fuck Rex Ryan's arrogant ass and his Jets.  Fuck him bad.  So I want both of these teams to lose if it could happen.  I literally cannot decide who I want to win or lose more.

In any case, wow the Jets are mailing this one in.  You can tell the Steelers are fired up and playing with passion but the Jets are just going through the motions at this point.  What an embarrassment.
