Food Fight is one sale for $1.99
Nightfall just released for $4.99
Both are deckbuilding games kind of like Ascension...and oh hey look at that, both of them are by Playdek, the guys that made Ascension iOS.
A quote from someone explaining Nightfall a bit:
Nightfall and Ascension are similar in scope. In the hobby boardgame market, "deck building" refers to any game the borrows its inspiration from Dominion in that you are creating your deck on the fly during game play, rather than pre-constructing your own deck prior to the beginning of the game. Nightfall comes closer to Magic: the Gathering than Ascension did in that you have card effects where you get to choose specific targets and you have to choose a target opponent when your minions attack.
Sounds cool to me.
I grabbed Food Fight since it was on sale and gave it a quick spin, and it seems neat. Its like a spiced up version of War. The deck building comes at the start of each round through a drafting process. Each player gets 9 random cards, takes 1, and passed the rest to the left. Again, pick 1 and pass until all the cards are chosen. Then out of your hand you choose 5 cards to take into battle. Battles are breakfast, lunch, or dinner and there can be multiple battlefields on the table to choose from. Once the battle starts your 5 cards are shuffled and then drawn and put up against the opponents drawn card. Cards can have special effects and you can have extra "instants" to play to give you the edge. You win, you earn a "mint", and then the next cards are drawn and fight. When all the cards are used up whoever has the most mints wins and you earn the battlefield card. Those battlefield cards can be worth 1-3 points and first player to 10 wins the game.
Its pretty simple to figure out, still has some randomness involved, but its pretty cool. The art is really nice, it has async multiplayer, and I think some kind of singleplayer campaign that Ill try tomorrow. I'd say worth the $2.
