Tiny Tower has not one, but three clones in the app store. Dream Heights from Zynga is basically an exact clone with crappy art. Glu Mobile released two games but at least they are slightly different. Small Street has you adding stores and homes along a street and you drive a taxi to get people places, and Lil' Dungeon has you building down with a fantasy theme.

Crazy.

Capcom is finally releasing Ghost Trick (NZ store) worldwide. US release will be tonight. Its a free download and you can play the first 2 chapters, then its $10 for the full game. This is a port of the DS game, but all night and high res. Sadly, wont run on iphone 3g or ipod 2g.

I read "Experience this much beloved, touching story for yourself", and all I saw was "touching yourself". Go figure.

Cool game. I really wish I'd finished it. Won't be buying it twice, though. I need to break out my DS more often. I still have 2 Layton games to go through.

This news is awesome, I want to play this but just haven't gotten around to buy the DS one since I didn't think I would play it right away and I was getting worried that it was going to be hard to find. For $10 I will definitely bite.

Heh, played my first TTR game online against a random guy. The async didn't even come into play since we were both on we just kept exchanging turns. Anyway, it was obvious he had some cross country tickets to complete and he had a nice track going but there was one 4 segment blue track in the middle of the country he couldnt complete. Totally boned him since tickets you don't complete are deducted from your score at the end, and he had like 3 high cost ones. I on the other hand played it safe, most of my destinations ran along the east coast. In fact, when I took extra tickets one was already done as soon as I took it, and the other just needed a 2 segment bit of track. Boom, easy points. Then I just laid out all the track I had to end the game quickly and go for the longest track bonus.

End score:

Me: 141
Him: 48

For some reason I can easily start random matches, but I tried inviting Que to a game and I kept getting an error. Annoying. Id rather play with people I know.

Just found a couple more.

Fractal: Make Blooms Not War - Free! iPad only. I got the PC version in a recent indie bundle. Neat game.
Neuroshima Hex - $2.99 (prev $4.99). Cool board game.
Neuroshima Hex Puzzle - $0.99 (prev $2.99). A puzzle version of the board game. Kind of like those chess puzzles that you need to solve.
The Blocks Cometh - Free! Platformer where blocks fall into the level and you must climb for the high score.
Prose with Bros - Free again! Compete and see who can make the dirtiest poem.

EDIT Another one!

Adventure Bar Story preview

Despite the name, its not from Kairosoft. But thats ok, it looks cool anyway. A port of a Japanese PSP game, its described as a Recettear-like where you run a bar, go into the dungeon for ingredients, etc. Should be released on the 28th for 99 cents, and then it'll get bumped up to $2.99. I might bite right away.

Totally awesome news, Ticket to Ride Pocket was updated so you can now buy the USA 1910 expansion in-app. Adds new destination tickets and several new game modes. Wee! 99 cents. So bought.

Also, Gamasutra has an interesting postmortum about TTRPs development.

Operarion: Eradicate looks interesting. Just lunched and is going to be half off until next Sunday, so its currently $1.99. Seems to be a clone of the boardgame Pandemic, but instead of fighting of spreading disease you're fighting off zombie outbreaks.

I've got a week before the price goes up so I'm going to wait and see if the reviews are good before jumping in.

EDIT

Well, I happened to see they were going to give away copies to Twitter and Facebook followers. They only had 20-ish Twitter followers and 100 on FB, so I figured it was worth a shot. I won a copy on Twitter, so I'll be able to give it a spin and report back.

EDIT2

Ok, downloaded it and ran through the tutorial. Its very heavily based on Pandemic (at least from my reading and understanding of the rules of Pandemic, since I have yet to play it). So, thats cool. But I can only recommend the game if you have an iPad. It will run on my iPod, but the text and buttons are super tiny and it makes it difficult to play or even know whats going on. Had to hold the thing 2 inches from my face to read anything.

iPad = Yay
iPhone/Pod = Pass

Hopefully they update to maybe fix this, because I really would like to play it.

A couple freebie top down shooters today.

Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time! has you running around inside a building fighting off some wacky zombies.

Extraction: Project Outbreak Is a more traditional shooter, but doesn't go the dual-stick route. Tap to move, swipe over enemies to target.

This one is a game...sort of. Zombies, Run! is actually a fitness app to get you running. As you run you will be "chased" by zombies, you'll pick up supplies and can use the to build a base after your run, opening more missions and such. An interesting take. Only bummer is its $8, so I will wait for a price drop.

Well, I've done. In about two days I'll be done with Tiny Tower. At that point my cineplex will be completed and I'll have all the floors. Everyone in my building will be working their dream job as well, but I won't have 9's across the board (that just seems like too much work). I think this took me on the order of five to six months of play. Mostly this was done in the 20ish minute bus ride too and from campus and right before I went to bed.

Now I have to figure out what to do on the bus.

You know its kind of sad how the iOS and Free-to-Play markets intersect and basically killed all the city building style games. The vast majority of them are Farmville-likes with timers and in-app purchases. Hard to find any decent, complete, offline playable, no time limit "building" games. Except maybe the Kairosoft games.

Yeah, that sucks.

That Zombies, Run app is hilarious, but it actually looks pretty awesome. If there's a price drop on that I would seriously consider grabbing it. I wonder how much there is to it.

iPhone version of Assassin's Creed: Recollection is coming March 8th. Universal app so hopefully the iPad version just gets an update (which I grabbed when it was free...wee! Unfortunately requires retina display so its 4g or nothing.

Now this one is Android only at the moment, but I'm posting it here because they do tend to release stuff on iOS. Dungeon Village from Kairosoft has to building up a town to train RPG heroes that go off and fight in the dungeon. Looks totally awesome and I hope they port it to iOS soon.

And now a freebie, New World Colony dropped to free again. Cool hex-based boardgame-like game.

So the iPad 3 is announced. The big change is using a "retina" display at 2048x1536 resolution. On a 10 inch screen. Overkill much?

What was interesting is a few days ago Pocketgamer had a roundup of quotes from various iOS devs.

Quote
"In terms of development, I think it'll be a lot more time consuming to create interfaces for Universal applications if Apple doubles the screen size.

"Supporting both 480x320 and 2048x1536 resolutions is a significant difference.

"Double the pixel density means that textures need to hold four times the number of pixels resulting in much higher file sizes. This is especially problematic if applications still need to be less than 20MB for 3G download."

Another mentions the ballooning filesize is bad because you will have 100MB apps to download but a user will only need 20% of the assets because their device only supports one res.

I wonder how many developers will just stick with iPad 2 res and let the iPad 3 upscale it.

EDIT Looks like Apple has finally raised the 3g download limit to 50MB. Thats pretty nice, but for "zomg HD graphics!" its still basically nothing.
