SCOTT! (This is a I need help thread)
« on: Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 04:24:42 PM »
How do I port forward?

I have my ADSL router connected to my wifi router, to which my PC is connected.

Whenever I try to use bit torrent, I don't get the green smileys. They are either yellow or blue, suggesting a NAT problem, and I don't get proper download speeds.

Someone suggested I create a virtual server on my NAT settings and create a port forwarding.

I am having some trouble with that.

Whenever I enter my local IP address (192.168.0.100), it rejects and says: LOCAL IP AND ROUTE LOCAL IP ARE NOT IN THE SAME SUBNET.

Also, in the virtual server settings, there are a lot of application options to chose from. What should I be choosing for torrents, or does it not matter?

Lastly, there is also an option of DMZ. What is that?

edit:

Should mention that when I connect my cable modem instead of my DSL to the wifi router, there are no such problems. Only issue is that cable modem is on a really slow bandwith package, as I have it only for backup.

Yo Pug!

Which brand and model router do you have?

A DMZ is a "demilitarized zone" which would technically solve the problem but it may present security risks, since your machine would be connected directly into the internet, with no hardware firewall.

Your IP address will likely not be 192.168.0.100, since that's likely your router's IP. Check again, your machine's IP will be something like 192.168.0.101 or 102 and so on.

Btw, you can check out this site, http://portforward.com, it helped me quite a bit when I was trying to figure some of this stuff out.

If you have one router connected serially into another, then both routers would have to do port forwarding.  So, to forward from the internet to the PC, the first router (ADSL) has to forward the port to the local IP it supplies to the 2nd (WiFi).  Then the 2nd needs to forward the same port to the (possibly different) local IP it supplies your PC.  I don't know enough to help you with that "subnet" error message.

Xessive, that's the local IP according to Windows.

The ZXDSL.

Cobra, I realize that.

For some reason every ISP I have tried hasn't given me an issue except for this.

Pug, you going to be online tonight around 10 EDT?  If so, I could use Teamviewer to take a look.  BTW, make sure you use a non-standard port for bittorrent.  Some ISP's block the standard port.  Not sure if that is common in Pakistan or not.

Scott, thanks for your offer. I decided to just drop the DSL and get cable instead.
