How goes it? How is your job treating you? When are you getting married? Would you like me to ship you some goats for your wedding?

Job has been pretty crazy.  The Sr. Network Engineer/my boss left about a month ago and we are still finding quirky things he did or things we thought he had done but did not.  We have also been trying to run a script that will help us get good backups of something called Hyperion.  Thus far, it has done that but it also is leaving the app non-functional in the morning and it is taking a couple hours to get it working again. We have been getting raked over the coals for it.  But it is IT operations.  This stuff comes with the territory.  Pretty thanklesss job.

Jennie and I got married in June.  Goats would have been... interesting.  We got married in a 130 year old chapel.  It didn't have A/C.  When we checked out the place in June 2009, it felt cool in there.  But our wedding day was one of the most humid days of the year.  The Arizonians that came were dying.  The thing everyone remembers most about our wedding is how hot it was.  That's a shame, but it was truly hot as hell.  Luckily, the ceremony was short and the reception did have A/C.  People do remember that we had a real nice reception, they just remember the heat more.

Edit:  Sorry for the weird words in some places.  I typed it on my Droid Incredible and it likes to change things I type because it thinks they are misspelled.

Scott, a qualified and experienced IT man such as yourself could get a well paying job in Dubai. Have you considered doing something like that?

a) You always seemed to have wanted to travel, with your talk of Japan etc.

b) Dubai is a super multicultural place with fantastic stuff to do.

c) You could do it for a year or so to see how you like it, if you are confident enough to find work should you choose to return.

d) You'd be closer to me, so it would be easier to ship those goats. I'd send a camel as well.

e) You'd make shitloads of money and live like a prince. :P

Whoops, I remember you told Folk a while back that you were getting married soon.

Congratulations! As for the heat, well, that makes it more memorable I guess, as you say.

Ah, this case:
Quote
In a 2009 article describing the collapsing Dubai economy, The New York Times reported that the Palm was sinking and this has been confirmed now by geological surveys, at the moment it is 5 millimetres (0.20 in) per year but this could increase rapidly. Furthermore there are many reported cases where people had bought houses before they were built and are furious about the space available now and the way they seem to be living on top of each other.

Nakheel refuted the claims by the New York Times who had quoted one small ground survey firm that the island was sinking. They defended the single claim by saying that there had been no reports of any structural problems on any of the buildings on the island which would be expected if there were any subsidence. Nakheel also outlined that claims suggesting Palm Jumeirah has sunk by 5mm, as detected by remote sensing (satellite) techniques, are not possible given that NASA’s laser altimeter satellites have an accuracy of only + or – 50 millimetres (2.0 in).

I haven't heard anything bad about the UAE in terms of security, but isn't it dangerous for Americans in the Middle East in general?  Sorry if this seems ignorant, but that's the general perception here.

I think I would have a hard time convincing Jennie to move to Dubai regardless.  She's having a hard enough time in Cincinnati since her mom moved to Puerto Rico and we are probably moving to the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, Florida area next year to be closer to her sister and dad.  And that's only a thousand miles distance.  Six thousand might be an issue.

But you know if I was single and it was safe, I would definitely have considered it more deeply.

haha not in Dubai. It isn't ignorant, no worries.

Do some research on foreigners in Dubai. It is like a multicultural hot spot.

Anyway, I can understand her not wanting to move even locally. If you guys do change your minds in four or five years, do consider Dubai.

As I said, it is like a European country on an desert island. There are pubs, women, clubs etc. Hell, there are churches in Dubai as well. When you get the chance, Google "Is Dubai safe for Americans?".

The other thing is that IT guys from the US and Canada are in huge demand there. They often make three times what they make at home. A lot of people go there for a few years, make a crapload of money, and then move back.

You are right though, it probably would have been a more attractive option, had you been single.

I see this post is almost a year old, but I thought I'd reply.
I am a young, fair-skinned, light-haired American college student, and I am spending the semester here. I haven't had a single problem in this city whatsoever regarding my nationality or name or color or language. Nearly everyone here is from somewhere else, with a large European population. English is spoken by everyone, although obviously some is better than others. All of the street signs and menus and everything are in Arabic and English. I dress as I would in the States, I eat the same food, I shop at the same or similar stores. It is a very safe city for Americans, or anyone else for that matter.
As long as you are respectful of the local culture, you will do fine here. I actually just visited a dentist who moved here from Michigan 8 months ago. There are a lot of medical facilities along Jumeirah Beach Road, I'm sure you could find a job.
I'm not sure I could live her permanently, but that is mostly because my family and friends are all Stateside, and I miss them. But as far as the comforts of home, there is a starbucks and a mcdonalds on every corner.
Hope this helps!

Bear in mind that there's almost always a US vessel docked in Dubai, and the malls are crawling with marines/navy. Ok, I exaggerated a bit, but there are American soldiers often scattered about on leave in Dubai.

That's a moderately accurate statement. They're always in search of some sexual conquest, it's not exclusive to Eastern European women.

Haha no worries, I'll excuse your handicapped typing for now!

Prostitution has become quite common everywhere here. If you look for it you'll start seeing it everywhere. We learn to ignore it. The really crappy part is that any chick wearing slightly compelling garments could be mistaken for a 'tute. That's one reason why women here generally prefer to dress more modestly than in North America or Europe.

I guess it is also to be expected when there is a one city country that is extremely rich, and has a lot of single people going through it all the time, looking for a good time.

Well, I there are seven emirates that are part of the UAE, but each sorta exists as its own entity with its own ruler etc. There is Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah... and so on.

Bangkok? I was always under the impression that Dubai was the Beverly Hills of the Middle East. I read about someone there who wanted to go skiing so he built an indoor mountain with snow!
Suck it, Pugnate.

Sort of.. They're a bit like States.. The word Emirate literally translates to Principality. Each has a governing authority but they all report to the UAE government, based in the capital city: Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the two major cities in the UAE, being the major trade hubs as well. Dubai is definitely more "international" than Abu Dhabi because it has a much larger and more varied influx of expats. Dubai is also one of the biggest wannabe cities in the world.. What a wannabe city you may ask? It's a city that's trying really, really hard to be the best of other cities in trivial crap i.e. it wants to have the world's [insert adjective]est [insert noun]. I mean if they went for something like the world's most successful hospital or the world's most advanced technological research laboratory I'd understand but they go for goofy crap like the world's first upside-down building or the world's hottest golf resort; ridiculous, trivial shit that does nobody any good.
