So I might be tossing away my job, apartment, and current life.
« on: Monday, November 08, 2010, 06:51:05 PM »
And moving to Texas to rent a room at Pyro's new place to pursue a career in writing.  I grant you that this is not what you would exactly call a logical consideration given the state of the world, but... well, you only live once, right?

Thoughts?

That would be cool if you could focus on your writing more, keep in mind that a lifestyle in Texas is completely different than one in California.  I can't really elaborate on why, it just is.  It will be awesome having you and Pyro only a few hours from me so we could meet up more often than once a year.

I have to echo what angrykeebler said.  I've always found that if I hit a low spot, the only thing that really gets me out of it is a big change.

WE DRINK IT OUT OF STRAWS WHILE WEARING COWBOY HATS

Dude, he isn't kidding.  There are more restaurants per capita in the Dallas/Fort Worth area than I have ever seen before in my life.  It's truly insane.  Driving down the highway looking at the stuff on either side, it's just nuts.  There aren't like a few packed together in different spots or anything, it's an endless string of them that just goes on seemingly forever.

But yeah... I went through a lot this year and I feel like it's time for a change.  I've been doing what I've been doing so long that I feel like I'm no longer getting any personal growth out of it.  It was good for a time, and it certainly provided me stability and the chance to build a life for myself, but I think maybe it's time for that life to change.  Whether I succeed or fail I don't think even matters so much as moving on and putting myself somewhere where I have the chance to grow again; God knows I need it.

Plus then I can spoon with Pyro again.  I've missed it so.

But thanks for the responses, guys.  It's a major change and there's definitely some working up to it required.

Sounds like an adventure! Just out of curiosity, why Texas? I guess I just have bad memories of it from the last time I was there. Plus I associate Texas with my racist, homophobic grandfather. But I know the entire state isn't like that, it's just what is burned into my mind when I think of Texas.

I am a big fan of making sweeping changes when things stagnate, so I say go for it if you really believe it's what you want to do!

Do it. It seems the only thing you're really leaving behind is your job, and you don't even seem to like it.  I'd say take the risk, you'll regret it when you're older if you don't.  Also, are there hot girls in Texas?

This may be the first time I've seen a post from A.K., that wasn't a joke.

Anyway, it is the right move Que. Obviously, it is pretty risky, and you should try to get a part-time job there before you make your move... but yea. Good luck.

Yes, voice of caution.  Security is underrated, particularly now.  If you have no obligations, though, you can live on a shoestring budget while you settle into a new place.  Just don't underestimate the amount of things that will change.

Whatever you do, don't burn any bridges.  Keep things friendly with your current employer.  (I know you want to tell them to stuff it.  Don't.)  You seldom know when you take the wrong fork in the road until after you took it, so keep the option to backpedal open, if possible.

I heartily endorse this product and/or life-changing decision.

I guess everyone's already said it already, but do what makes you happy. And listen to Cobra - he gives quite good advice when he isn't going through one of his senile phases.

Yea he probably should have, but it is such a massive decision. It is probably the right thing to do, but it couldn't have been easy. Also, what he went through recently, and plus the fact that his good friend is there now means that it is a much clearer option now.

The only thing still keeping Que is his job I guess. He isn't attached to anything else anymore. And because he doesn't have as many responsibilities anymore, it is probably easier for him to kiss the job he hates goodbye.

Yeah, Pug pretty much nailed it.  And K-man is right... I complained about my life for a long time for a lot of reasons, some of which were self-inflicted, others which were circumstantial, but ultimately I feel like now I have the opportunity to do something about it for the first time in a long time.  I was never in a position to quit my job before, ever, but I've saved some money and my grandfather left me some, and that's why the plan to move to Texas and work on some writing.  In California, I figure I could live comfortably for a year on my savings while I tried this experiment, then I'd be out (assuming I was at absolute zero for income).  In Texas, that estimate moves to 3 years.  Plus if I move into a room at Pyro's place, I'll have the added benefit of not being able to bring basically everything I own, forcing me into sort of a sensory deprivation kind of thing where I'll essentially be living in an office.  This should help me to focus and spend the time I need to in trying to start a writing career.  Plus I'm dating a girl who lives near there, by strange coincidence, and while she was originally thinking about moving out to California, she ultimately decided to stay in Texas because it's much easier for her to get her teaching credential and continue down the path she's going down if she's there rather than here.

So it probably wouldn't be forever, just for a while, just for a chance at something different and to throw my life out of balance a little and see what happens.

I think what I really need to figure out now is when and how.  I'm thinking I'll quit my job by the end of the year, take January off to pack and get things organized here, then sometime in February Heather will probably fly out here, we'll finish getting things together, then take a road trip in my car over the course of 3 or 4 days (longer if we decide to see some things) and make our way to Fort Worth.

If nothing else, this will surely be an interesting experience.

Thanks, K.  Most of the games will, sadly, be tucked away in a storage bin somewhere collecting dust.  I will miss them... but then I haven't been playing them much anyway, and at least Pyro will still have games at his place.

I'll definitely let you know, Bel.  Heather, Corey and I can head up to your place or something, or you could come stay for a weekend or whatever... we'll do something fun for sure.

Also I can't say that I have ever dusted anything in my entire life.

Well, I've resigned.  As of November 30th, I will no longer be employed by Alameda County and will never have to walk into that hateful building ever again.  I am extremely happy.  When I turned in my papers, people kept coming by my desk and telling me how happy I looked.  I wasn't conscious of it, but I guess it showed.

Don't know when I'll be making the move to TX, but at some point in the next few months (before March, since the meet will happen then).  I also fidgeted with The Flying Monkey Apparatus just a tad in preparation for eventually turning it into a real website so that I can masquerade as a professional.  Started a pointless Twitter account, too.  Sometimes it's less about usefulness and more about just having a presence.

However, I did discover something terrible.  Apparently I have a namesake who is a musician and has already gotten the grab on michaelriser.com.  Fuck.  I may have to get Raisa to kill him, because this is getting in the way of my marketing plans.

Yeah, I thought of that.  I already have TFMA, which is one thing I've had undisclosed, grandiose visions for over a number of years... it'll do at least for a while until I work everything else out.

But thanks for the support.  I have high hopes, not so much for money or success, but for finally being able to do something I love to do.  I wrote a short story today in a flurry of energy... hope to finish it soon and enter it into a contest right off the bat just for fun, to get the ball rolling.  Just being able to feel like I can do that and do it as part of something bigger makes me happy.

It feels crazy.  I'm terrified out of my mind, but I'm also more excited than I've ever been.  I don't know what's going to happen in my life over the next year or so, but even with the risk of failure, I can't wait to find out.

Well congrats.  I know you hated that place.  I've been there before and I know it is usually a great feeling to leave a place of employment or a job you hate behind.

I'm not there yet, but I'll be moving to Florida probably within the next year.  I just went there last week for Thanksgiving with Jennie's family there and I pretty much didn't want to come back.  It was 80-82 all week.  When I got off the plane in Cincy, there was a little snow and ice on the ground and it was 35.  I won't miss that at all.

I'm worried too, because all the IT jobs I've gotten have been through networking in the IT community.  I'll be leaving all my contacts behind and my chances will ride completely on my resume.  My resume is alright, but as people always say it's not what you know, it's who you know.

So I'll be interested to hear how things go for you when you move.  Obviously not the job hunt part, but just how you handle the change emotionally and how long it takes you to adjust to a new place.

Thanks, man.  I hope Florida works out well for you.  God knows it didn't for me (don't ask).

I have no idea what my brain is going to go through in the coming while, but documenting it would probably serve some purpose for me down the road.  We'll see how crazy I go.
