Hahaha, come on now. New Zodiac
« on: Friday, January 14, 2011, 06:33:17 PM »
I just read that there's all of a sudden a new zodiac sign.  I don't know how this came about, but find it pretty funny.  Also, this has somehow changed my sign.  I don't know how that works because you'd think hypothetically, only the people in the term for the newly discovered sign would be "affected" rather than the entire scale altering.

Hippies and new age freaks all over are probably re-evaluating their lives.

I'm just happy that finally, at the age of 30, I am no longer a virgo.

I don't know how this came about...

Astronomer: "Man, astrology is bullshit. All the signs are totally off due to the wobble of earths axis. Just for fun, what would they be if I adjusted them what should they be?"
Press: "OMG THE ZODIAC HAS CHANGED! NEW SIGN ADDED!"
Astronomer: "Not really. The old zodiac had 13 signs but when it was determined to be unlucky, they dropped one. I just put it back and adjusted the dates to fit with the current posit..."
Astrologers: "This man is a phony! Science can not explain the true power of the stars!"
Press: "OUR LIVES ARE CHANGED FOREVER!"
Astronomer: "I was just pointing out that...you know what? Forget it. Fucking morons."

that's why i reckon it's better to go with the more "ancient" systems--the Vedic Calendars!

Ever seen vedic multiplication? It's pretty cool. I bought a book a few months back called "Who's looking a Euclid" and it describes a few things like vedic multiplication. There is zombie multiplication and another one that I can't think of off the top of my head. Very cool interesting book. Check it out.

There is a vid of vedic multiplication. Which coincidentally made by the author of the book.

Technically this only affects newborns. The original constellations were aligned to our dates of birth.

I think it's a bit more dependable to just go with the Chinese zodiac signs.

Absolutely hehe I don't follow horoscopes at all. But I do believe there's something to say for similar personality and character traits shared by people among the similar dates and celestial conditions. We just label them as zodiac signs.

Well look at that.  I've always been a "Pissies" who came of age when Aquarius was cool.  Now I'm an Aquarius.  Woo?

Really? Just asking, but do you believe that people born on similar dates and celestial conditions have predetermined personality traits, or at least traits influenced by these conditions?

Well, you have to think about the environmental effects on the mother and the unborn fetus. I just don't think it's a coincidence that people born in the summer generally exhibit similar character traits. It's not a cookie-cutter kind of scenario, there are plenty of factors undoubtedly, yet the result that they are similar in one way or another remain. The observations over thousands of years suggest that people born at certain times of the year will have certain underlying personality characteristics.

It's easy to treat it all as a subjective reaction to what people are told "Oh my God, you're so right, I do get along with Aquarians!" The best way about it, in my opinion, is to take an objective stance and run some social experiments. It's awkward, it's contrived, it's fun, and it might result in some very interesting stories to tell ;)

So who do you believe?  References to constellations in the zodiac are "allegorical"?  Ooooh-kay!  Whatever it takes to preserve your belief system, I guess.

I'm not going to lie here:  I don't find it any more or less stupid the way he describes it.  Based on seasons or based on fucking retarded connect the dot drawings.  All the same bullshit at the end of the day.  At least the Chinese did it a way that makes sense.

Religiously, I don't know about Christianity, but according to Muslim scholars, it is against Islam to believe in Astrology. In fact it is considered a major sin (shirk), including believing that people born under certain astronomical alignments will have certain personalities.

I wonder what other religious beliefs are regarding astrology, though I know that Hinduism is tied with it.

As for what Xessive is saying, that physical environment can shape a person's personality... I guess there could be some truth to it. Everything shapes personality I guess.

That's the argument I've heard to try to lend some credence to astrology.  Sure, 2 people born in the same place at the same time might have enough common environmental experiences as they grow up to form some common personality traits.  But astrology goes way beyond that.  It's mysticism, a faith-based belief system just like any religion.  It's pointless to argue against religion, or astrology.  Those who believe in it won't be dissuaded.  Those who think it's bunk don't need negative arguments about it.

According to Islam it's wrong to believe in horoscopes, divination, or any superstitious bullcrap (including "rub this for luck" attitudes etc.). Islam encourages the study of Astrology as a science not as a divination support argument. Technically, Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge in general.

While Astronomy is the study of cosmic events (an actual science), Astrology is often treated as a pseudoscience for divination; the reality of the study is philosophical and psychological rather than the superstitious "mumbo jumbo" it's commonly portrayed as. Dismissing Astrology would be like dismissing Mythology as a legitimate field of study. However I do agree with Cobra that people who claim to believe in astrology are mesmerized by the mysticism rather than any argument of common sense or scientific reasoning that could explain the similarities between people.

I've come a cross more than my share of superstitious nut-jobs who would actually pay to see "psychics," "mystics," and "mediums" (would the plural of Medium be Media?). I've had a fair share of arguments with some so-called "psychics." They seem to be people who get off to the smell of their own farts. I've had someone try to convince me that we were "kindred spirits in a past life" to which I smiled and said "perhaps, but in this life I subscribe to common sense and my trusty instincts."

While I generally choose to be open-minded and receptive to the possibility of the seemingly impossible I firmly believe that no one can foretell the future; at least not beyond common-sense and logical deductions like "keep acting like a jackass and someone's bound to smack some sense into you."

EDIT:
Fun fact: While perusing the WWW I discovered that the archaic term "starcraft" actually means "astrology." :P
