Topic: How the hell do you figure out what job you want?

Right now my problem is finding a suitable job to get me by for now, but the larger issue is trying to figure out what to do with my life. I thought I wanted to work on games, as an artist. Well, I did a good job of screwing that up during college, and I'm not sure I should even bother trying that again.

I guess my biggest problem is that I hate people. How the hell do you find a job to work around that? I check the classified ads, and around here it's all food service and elderly care. I'm sure there are companies around here that have positions available that would suit me, but how the hell do I find them?

if you've got minimal qualifications, the choices are either getting more education or just applying for everything that looks vaguely bearable, sticking it out and working up. last time i was unemployed, i checked three different job websites daily and applied for anything with a hint of something technical to it. don't know what the job market is like where you are, but it would often be months between interviews, which was quite disheartening, but there isn't really another option!

Coworkers is ok I guess, though the less the better. I mention the service industry because it seems most of those jobs include interaction with customers, which is exactly what I don't want.

Basically, most people get on my nerves. A lot. It's not that I want to be able to be alone all the fucking time, but less people means less chance of dealing with douchebags.

Acceptance is the wrong way to look at it. I'd say it's more of a realization that there's no alternative.

Exactly.  I've never met anyone who loved their job.  It's work.  No one likes work.  Everyone wishes they could be doing something different.  You just find something you can stand doing and go with it.

I'm severely allergic to cats, and very mildly allergic to dogs (I live with 3 dogs, I just don't touch my face after touching them or my eyes get irritated). I'm fine with dead things.

I actually thought about seeking out mortuaries to see if I could find something, but I'm not sure how well that would go over just being some random guy off the street asking to work with dead bodies.

Working with dead people requires school.  Medical training.  Not something you just up and do.

But yeah, man, work isn't fun and even if you like what you do, it's still work.  If it was purely pleasurable, they wouldn't pay you to do it.  Try to minimize the damage and find something you can tolerate, but if you're holding out for some dream job I think you'll be sorely disappointed.  That doesn't come easy for anyone, much less someone who hasn't worked for as long as you've been out of the loop.  Which is why my advice is to just get whatever you can find, then spend most of your spare time hitting job boards online, waiting for something decent to come up.  The economy is fucked, man.  There are better, more qualified people out there who'll take almost anything.  It sucks but it's the truth.  Finding a job isn't as simple as it once was.

After you start working, get your own place. The hunger to make more money will come when you are on your own, and you will suddenly want to go back to school to get a better job.

Have you thought of murder for hire? The pay is great and there is usually minimal interaction with people.
