PS3 Backward Compatibility Problems
« on: Tuesday, November 14, 2006, 07:19:03 PM »
I thought Sony did a lot to prevent this from happening.

Well, that sorta sucks. I know a lot of people don't really care about backwards compatibility, but it's still one of my favorite features of the PS2 and something I looked forward to with the PS3. I guess this means they lied about putting the hardward of the old systems in like they did with the PS2.

So the question remains, is Sony just seeing how much they could fuck up and still come out on top?

Backwards compatibility on the PS2 interested me, but to be honest, I never used it really.  I didn't have a PSX.  The only PSX game I tried to play on PS2 was Silent Hill, and it sucked because I didn't have a PSX memory card to save the game, just the PS2 one.

Didn't the PS2 have a problem like this too with only a very very small percentage of PS1 games?  This looks like the same thing.  As usual people blow a simple bug or problem out of proportion.  It will probably get fixed by Sony, if it doesn't I have a PS2 so I personally don't give a shit.

They've at least addressed it and said that there will be a software fix, so that's not so bad.  It's odd that it happened at all, really, but at least they're planning to take care of it.  I really enjoy the backward compatibility of the PS2, definitely want to see that continue.  I hate the fact that I still have to keep my Xbox out because the fucking 360 isn't backcomp.  That's really annoying.

The thing is, if the old hardware's in there, why do they need software updates? Unless someone loaded up some bad firmware, the only other thing to update is emulation.

I'd guess it's being blown out of proportion, but with the PS2 I didn't run into a single PS1 game that didn't run perfectly on the PS2. Things that didn't work were generally obscure. Now if FFXII and a Silent Hill game arn't working, that's hardly obscure.

These things are bound to happen with a switch in the GPU manufacturers. Not a big deal.
