So Bungie had some crap to say

    Happy Halo Day!

Today marks the five-year anniversary of Halo and to commemorate this occasion, Microsoft just revealed a few tantalizing announcements for fans of the franchise. You may have already read the details online elsewhere but we thought it'd be best to recap these events ourselves and perhaps shed some additional light on what's ahead.

For starters I'd just like to point out that all of you out there in our beloved community are now officially coined "Halo Nation." How do you like your new moniker? I suppose "Underground Army recruits to further Bungie's goals of World Domination" just didn't have the same ring to it. But between us, we know that's what's really going on. For now we'll all agree to go along with this ruse.

    Halo 3 Commercial!

Now to the business at hand - There's some juicy Halo information to absorb and process. First up is the announcement of an exclusive worldwide Halo 3 TV commercial set to air during Monday Night Football on December 4th. Naturally we don't want to spoil the fun but we did want to clear the air on a few points up front to set your expectations appropriately. As the press release mentions, this ad will feature CG scenes that are being built by a 3rd party agency (known as Digital Domain). Now you may be thinking to yourself - "CG!? But Bungie doesn't do CG!" - and you would be correct... until now.

For the purposes of this holiday commercial and knowing the tight timeline with which it had to come together we decided a long time ago that utilizing real, final, actual gameplay just wasn't the right thing to do. As you know, we're very protective of our baby and we will only show it when we feel it's ready to be shown (and even then it's sometimes pried from our protective fingers). We all agreed that a cooler thing to do would be to move as far away from gameplay-style footage as possible, and make something more movie-like. Let our fans see what the Halo universe looks like in a photo-realistic fashion.

We didn't want folks to think we were trying to pull the wool over their eyes, when we had such a great opportunity to do something cool and worthwhile.

Now don't get me wrong - just because this ad isn't gameplay doesn't mean it's not really cool. In fact, we provided the folks at Digital Domain with all of our new in-game models and assets. They then polished them up to movie CGI standards, animated them and rendered them to a degree of stunning beauty. There will be a lot to like in this ad and we're happy with how it's turning out. Just because you're seeing a kind of "real-life" representation of Halo 3 doesn't mean you aren't seeing real gameplay elements from Halo 3.

Of course you'll also hear Halo 3 as well, with new music composed by our own Marty O'Donnell. We'll leave it at that for now. After the commercial airs on television, it will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace in full 720p glory for you to dissect and discuss.

Shortly after the commercial airs, we'll be treating our fans to the next installment in our "making of" documentary series on Xbox Live Marketplace. This next "VIDOC" is going to give some new insights into elements of the campaign and will peel back the curtain on a certain prominent character in Halo 3. We'll talk more about this in the coming weeks.

    New Halo 2 Maps!?

Another bombshell that was dropped today was the announcement of upcoming new multiplayer maps for Halo 2. There are a ton of details we simply can't reveal right now but we can confirm that this content will be coming out sometime next Spring and it will cost something to download. We can also confirm that this new content is only going to be available on Xbox 360 and that you'll need a hard drive to download them (which is also required to play Halo 2 on 360 anyways).

That last point is probably going to rub some of you the wrong way. And frankly, we can't really blame you for potentially being a little upset at this news. We're really excited that these maps are coming together and we have the opportunity to give our fans some new content over two years after the game shipped but ultimately, when it comes to pricing and timing and distribution and exclusivity, it's not up to Bungie. We make games and in this case we're making maps. Microsoft Game Studios is our publisher and they have the final call on the when/where/how part of the equation.

We've seen a gradual shift in our online population more and more towards Xbox 360 but I know there are a lot of folks out there who haven't made the switch yet. Does that mean you'll never get to play these new Halo 2 maps? We can't say for certain, but ultimately we hope to find ways to make the maps more accessible to more fans over time. We have in the past, after all. But again, the final outcome of those decisions won't totally be up to us.

These maps are shaping up to be really cool and once we can start talking more about them, I think our fans are going to be very, very happy with what's in the works. With several hundred thousand people still playing Halo 2 on Xbox Live, it's clear that there's still high interest in our game, which is awesome. We're eager to get this new content in your hands as we have folks who are putting a lot of hard work into making something really cool.

One positive of all this is that the team responsible for the backwards compatibility on Xbox 360 are going to go back and look at Halo 2 again. Many of you are aware that a few bugs exist when playing Halo 2 on the new platform and we've gotten indications that work is being done to try and improve that experience.

And ultimately, if you want to play Halo 3 next year and if you want to take part in the OTHER big bomb that was dropped today (see below), you're going to have to upgrade to Xbox 360. There's still some time and hopefully between now and then, getting a 360 will be more viable for you and there will continue to be more and more reasons to convince you it's worth the upgrade. (if Halo 3 isn't already enough)

    Halo 3 Public Beta!?

Perhaps the biggest bomb that was dropped today, the MOAB of press announcements, was the indication of a public beta for Halo 3 coming next Spring. What exactly does this mean? Well, again we can't really get into the details quite yet (notice a theme here?) but we can confirm that our fans will have an opportunity to play Halo 3 multiplayer over Xbox Live BEFORE the final game is available. You'll be playing a little multiplayer and simultaneously providing us with some valuable data to help our development team. We're still working out the details on timing and scope and there will be a lot more info coming in the weeks ahead. We can confirm that you will absolutely be required to have an Xbox 360. Probably not a huge surprise.

    Stay Tuned!

As you can see, 2007 is shaping up to be a HUGE year for the "Halo Nation." And if all of this and ultimately Halo 3 isn't enough to satisfy your Halo cravings, there's even more on the longer term horizon like Ensemble's "Halo Wars" and the Bungie-Peter Jackson collaboration project that will result in some new adventures in the Halo Universe. In the short term, we have the upcoming release of Halo 2 for Windows Vista which should be landing on a PC near you sometime early in 2007. In addition to delivering Halo 2 in stunning hi-res glory with online optimizations and a custom map editor, it's also the only way to get precious Live achievements.

We'll continue to keep you abreast of the latest developments in the world of Halo and of course our ongoing progress with Halo 3 through Frankie's Weekly Updates. In the meantime, you can satisfy your Halo jones right now by checking out Eric Nylund's latest, "Ghosts of Onyx" and grabbing the new issue of EGM for a first look at some new multiplayer elements in Halo 3.

    But Wait, There's More!

And finally, in celebration of this special occasion, we are happy to present this brand spankin' new screenshot from Halo 3. Some folks may already have noticed this image in the current issue of Newsweek but it's small and puny. Now we bring it to you in full hi-res glory [See image at top of this story - ed.].

A quick note about this shot - this is an actual screenshot taken from the actual game within an actual campaign level of Halo 3. When the MGS PR team asked me to give them a new image for an upcoming issue of Newsweek magazine, this is what we came up with. It's intentionally not meant to really reveal anything - we just wanted to give a glimpse of the latest Master Chief model and I thought the level that environment artist Frank Capezutto was working on provided a great backdrop. What's not to love about next-gen rusty beams and pipes? And best of all, it gives away absolutely nothing. We told you that Halo 3 was still very much in development and work continues on making the game look and play great. I think this is a cool snapshot of where the team is right now. We hope you enjoy it! :)

Cliffs:
Halo 3 ad during superbowl will be CGI.
New Halo 2 maps coming, but only if you have a 360. I'm sure the fans LOVE this one.
Halo 3 multiplayer beta test open to the public in the spring.

Screenshot

He talks about it in the last paragraph, so I wont copy and paste it here. Now I'm going to rip it to shreds, because thats how I roll.

First and most obvious, why did they run Master Chiefs normal maps through a noise filter? Yeesh. I think they were jealous of all the detail in the Gears of War armor and wanted to do *something* with the rather plain MC armor.

Since this is an actual screenshot from an actual level in the actual game, I'm surprised that the game is running in 2560x1440. You know, lots of TVs run in 1440p. Not a jagged edge in sight, thats some nice AA. Wonder what sort of framerate they are sporting.

Background: they need to round those corners and edges. Old, worn, rusted metal doesn't usually have sharp defined edges.

All right, enough complaining.

Man, what Microsoft is doing to get people to upgrade to a 360 and/or Vista is practically extortion.  It's ridiculous.

I can't say I'm interested in the slightest.  I played Halo on the PC and it was ok.  I guess the SP was pretty good for a console.  The MP was crap, IMO.

Thatw as the first thing I noticed too, and it just looks out of place and kinda cheap.

Oh I just loved how their commercial is gonna be CG. Heaven forbid them to show actual footage as it may look inferior to other games *cough*gears of war*cough*.

Bungie needs to just get off your high-horse.

Halo 1: Single Player was half of a game on the PC -- half was great, other half sucked.
MP was decent, though. Game ran like junk on most PC's, too.

Halo 1 has to be one of the most overrated games ever made. PERIOD.

For Halo 2, extra maps for X360 owners that have the Hard Drive ONLY? Skip that crap.

And Halo 2 for the PC is going to be Vista Only.

I'm really beginning to dislike Bungie and M$ right about now....

Halo 1, in the first half, had levels/missions that varied -- vehicle missions, sniping missions, run-n-gun style missions, etc etc etc.

The introduction of The Flood led to something else. The game was extremely repetitive, as there was a lot of levels cut-n-pasted. Take a look at the levels w/ The Monitor -- many of those floors looked exactly the same as other levels before it. Enemies in even same places. If that wasn't enough, there was a lot of backtracking by the end, too. The game's 2nd half looked and felt EXTREMELY rushed.

There are many other superior shooters I can name: Max Payne 1 and 2, Quake 2, Quake 4, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, NOLF1, NOLF2, FEAR, Half-Life, HL2 -- that's just to name a few.

Oblivion was outstanding. Improved in every regard, over Morrowind. Most of my complaints from Morrowind were gone from Oblivion -- Morrowind's issues were the over-repetitive NPC's (in forms of paragraphs  of text even!), not-so-great AI, lack of variation in quests, crashes/bugs found in original retail box, framerate issues. Oblivion killed these issues and stomped them into the ground.

Hell, Oblivion runs and looks better on my rig w/ some settings on high and most on medium than Morrowind does completely maxed-out. You'd figure I'd have more trouble running Oblivion over Morrowind, not the other way around....

Halo is overrated. They made half a game and made you run through it forwards and backwards. And apparently guns fucking suck in the future at distances over, oh, 10 feet. The spray on those things were atrocious. Except for the omg zoom sniper pistol bew bew!

Though I do agree Oblivion is a bit overrated as well. I enjoyed it, but for me theres no replay value.

Curiosity factor: how many hours did you have logged into the game after you finished the game's main quest? (I'm assuming you finished the main quest b/c you said "there's no replay value.")

I often don't replay games -- especially since I have many other games to play already and games to go purchase. I spent 115 hours on Oblivion. I have no plans of replaying it, either though some quests have multiple finishes to them; I just want new Oblivion content!!!

Now, if I get a game that is say 6-10 hours, I'm hoping there's some replay value -- hopefully w/ extra endings, unlockables, and other junk so I can do another go around. I want more than 6-10 hours out of a game, myself. I'd like around 15 hours out of a "non-RPG" game -- yeah, that would be nice. I say that b/c most RPG's are over 15 hours, anyways; yes, even short Fable....Though, Fable has some replay value w/ most quests pretty much have a "good" and "evil path", anyways....

I didnt finish the main quest. But I logged 100 hours into the game. I did pretty much every other side quest out there.

I was hoping exploring the dungeons would have been better than they were. Part of the problem was there were only 2 or 3 dungeon "styles". The other part is the gear and stuff leveled with you. So I find this spooky dungeon, kill the thingys inside while avoiding traps...damn! Must be something awesome in here if its being protected! Nope...walk out with maybe 40 gold and the same crappy armor you already wear.

Now that would be a cool Oblivion mod and something I would reinstall for. Create unique and cool items like special weapons and armors and place a few in every dungeon in the game. Give players a reason to go in them.

*EDIT*

Maybe I will reinstall Halo and give it another chance. I just dont remember being thrilled with it the first go around.

*EDIT 2*

We turned a thread about Bungie and Halo into talking about Oblivion and RPGs. How the hell...

Wow....100 hours is a lot of time for a game.

Personally, if you get that much time out of a game (most games you definitely won't get that much), it shouldn't matter if it's replayable to you or not.

That's how I felt about Morrowind, as well. By sinking so much time into a game, yuh -- I often have this lack of desire to replay a game EVER again. I'll just want more content -- like an expansion or two or three.

That's just my opinion, though.

I didn't mind dungeon exploring in Oblivion, but yes, it was done a lot better in Morrowind. In Morrowind, finding loot and items was not leveled in Morrowind, so it was static. So, it made it feel more unique to find say a special set of armor, weapons, and all of that. Morrowind's lack of variation for quests made me not do as much questing as I did in say Oblivion -- that's to say the very least.

Oblivion gave me a different experience. Oblivion had me do quests to the High Heavens b/c it felt so varied -- unlike Morrowind. In Morrowind, I did less quests, but did more exploring. Found a lot of good stuff from exploring in Morrowind, I must say.

I like that idea.

I do like that Oblivion's loot leveled and all, but I also think what Oblivion should've done is have also this: MORE items be static in dungeons than what they did come up with, myself.

Even if you're say level 5, it'd be sweet to find a wicked powerful uber-sword that say a level 50 would get. What they should do is this: you'd just have to wait to you hit a certain level number or strength requirement (or something) to actually be able use such a powerful item.

I didn't want to look at Halo even again, after finishing its SP component. I was so disenchanted by that horrible 2nd half of the game. It pretty much took everything that the first half had going for it, which was variety galore -- and threw it into the trash bin. Well, they also recycled a lot of content in the 2nd half of Halo, so they used that bin, too!

The Halo MP was decent. I did give that some time; more so than the SP. It stayed on my hard drive for a little bit longer, only b/c of the MP.

Most FPS's aren't replayable for me. Most FPS's just don't have anything to new to give you, by doing a replay. Most are too linear -- and don't have multiple endings, to make you want to come back. Games like Max Payne 2 had me come back b/c there was another ending hiding, if you beat the game on its hardest setting. Plus, I found Max Payne 2 to be a hell of a lot of fun -- w/ Bullet Time and all.

Keep in mind, I thought Morrowind was a blast. I liked all of the questing, dungeon exploring, ruin adventuring, and things that Morrowind had going on.

Oblivion was even better to me than Morrowind was -- on the questing aspects, especially. They were more unique and more interesting. I enjoyed the Arena. I loved the Dark Brotherhood quests. Though, I enjoyed the dungeon and ruin exploring more so in Morrowind than Oblivion.

To each his own, I guess...

We all have our own versions of fun....

I dunno. I still have soft spots for the games. Something subtle about them just worked for me.

Something about that screenshot is off. Too much detail in certain areas and not enough in others. For such a simple shot, too much looks out of place. One of the good things about the previous games, visually, was they were consistent. Actually, I'd say that's pretty much true of most good looking games. Stuff like this looks like launch games for a new system where developers turn on all the automatic bells and whistles the new hardware allows without cleaning the style up. It looks amateurish.

Amateurish is a good word for it.  Terrible might be a better one.  I mean, really, when you consider who Bungie is and how much fucking money people have been throwing at them, even an early shot of Halo 3 shouldn't look that awful.  Like idol said, running the armor through a noise filter was a horrible, horrible idea.  Considering how basic a shot it is, it's really kinda' hard to say that much about it, but the fact that you can find so many negatives in a shot that shows virtually nothing is a bad sign.

And I agree that Halo is one of the most overrated games ever.  It had a couple of halfway decent moments, but it was by-the-numbers to a fault, the level design was *horrendous*, and all the guns felt weightless and weak.  I never even bothered with Halo 2 as comparisons between the two games gave me the impression that I'd find it just as completely worthless as its predecessor.  So sorry Sy... you won't be able to play Halo 3 on my 360 unless you buy it yourself.

What I find funny is how the design in Gears of War is at least somewhat similar to Halo.  It's more or less just a situational repetition type thing.  You really have this concept of gunfights in cover, and that's more or less repeated in each area (except for "unique" areas that use HL2-like hooks for a short while, such as driving a vehicle or luring a monster into a better tactical position).  The difference is that Halo's repetition felt... well, repetitive.  It was more or less like playing the exact same battle over and over again.  I'm loving Gears because you can approach the enemy in so many different ways because of the cover system, so you really get this more dynamic sense of the flow of battle.  You can go head on for a while, and if your position gets bad, start flanking.  Position actually matters a great and that helps keep the fights from feeling static.  Halo failed utterly on this level.  Every fight felt just like the last one.  This is also what kept me from trying Stubbs the Zombie which had my attention for a while.  I read a review that described my hatred of Halo's repetition as what made Halo great and that Stubbs had a similar situational repetition thing going.  No thank you.

And Oblivion... I liked it, but not as much as Morrowind.  Morrowind had a lot more focus on fiction and the universe itself.  Oblivion put more emphasis on the action and such.  I have some of the same niggles as idol.  I don't mind the leveling system at all and what have you, but I do wish they'd really put in some more unique equipment.  Equipment has always been a huge, huge weakness of TES games.  They really need to start playing Diablo 2 and taking notes.

I loved the scale of the game, to me it was just unheard of in a single player game, especially after coming off a diet of the 'congested corridor' shooter. It was refreshing to have the freedom to roam an alien planet on a vehicle that displayed fairly decent physics.

I thought the storyline was pretty good, and the A.I. was supreme. The squad A.I. wasn't bad, but the enemy A.I. just made the game for me. The weapons were fantastic; balanced and unique. You could play the game twice and not exhaust the weapon options.

I think it was just obviously a labor of love. The game had a soul, though yes I thought the introduction of the flood was where I started to lose interest. And while the recycled sections towards the end did take away points, the repetition near the end didn't bother me as much.

Hey I remember the last time we had a discussion on this, it was awesome  ;D. Remind me again what shooters were released in the same period as Halo on the Xbox?
Halo 1 released in Nov 2001.

Just picking games release 2000 to early 2002.

Dues Ex
Aliens Vs Predator 2
Tribes 2 (ps, kicks the shit out of Halo multiplayer)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
No One Lives Forever (NOLF2 came out just a year later)
Serious Sam (Take that, Flood!)

Oh well, pick a year and go nuts.

Also you might want to see some industry and not so industry artists take on the new Halo 3 shot here.

Dues Ex  - I enjoyed this game but I never finished it. Just got bored.
Aliens Vs Predator 2  - See "Deus Ex"
Tribes 2 (ps, kicks the shit out of Halo multiplayer)  - Except it was virtually unplayable when I picked it up. Random "Unhandled Exception" errors and crap performance.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein  - I liked this game and the multi-player was good too. Single player was forgotten fast though.
No One Lives Forever (NOLF2 came out just a year later)  - Never finished.
Serious Sam (Take that, Flood!) - I think I finished this in like 3 hours or something. Never wanted to touch it again. Good times though.
Suck it, Pugnate.

Theres no real contender to compare really, kinda like what Pug said. I mean Tribes 2 does give that open battle feeling, but Halo is a single player game, not a multi team player FPS so you really cant put that in the same argument. Serious Sam is just a shoot fest which I never cared for and the others really dont have the same experience as Halo, not to say its better.

I'm not saying what was better, but there were some damn good games released then.

Not like I cared, I only played Tribes 2 for like 3 years.

There you go.

Deus Ex was more of an RPG, in the first person perspective. But yea Deus Ex was what turned out to be my favorite game ever. Aside from Deus Ex, there is nothing on that list that nears what Halo did in 2001.

haha that's like saying Halo's singleplayer kicks the shit out of Tribes 2's singleplayer campaign. But yea, Tribes did the multiplayer thing a lot better.

There's really no arguing this.  Personally, I think Halo is one of the worst and most overrated FPS games to ever hit the market.  Ever.  And yes, I bought and played it shortly after it came out, so don't tell me it's because I came into it too late.  I just honestly can't see any viable reason why people like the game.  None.  It's repetitive, languid, flat, artistically uninspired, and the tech really wasn't even very impressive by the time they finally released it.  And the multiplayer sucks.  So why does the world love it?  I have no idea.  But they do.  It's made more money than its creators can count, people still salivate over it, and it's got a following far more dedicated than your average game series.  Huge player base.  Tremendous amount of support.  Big-name movie production in the works.

Then again, *you* guys don't understand why so many of us love TES games (Daggerfall / Morrowind / Oblivion).  They're hugely popular, they've made Bethesda one of the most storied developers in the country, they've put Bethesda on the map as one of the few developers really pushing true "next-gen" design philosophies, they have great fiction from a universal and individual standpoint, solid art design, more bang for your buck than pretty much anything else out there... and yet you don't like them.  To most people, that probably makes you look stupid.

Conversely, our dislike of Halo probably makes us look stupid to most other people.  It's a question of perspectives, and even though we can agree on plenty of other games, for some reason these games are points of contention.  I couldn't tell you why, but I really don't see any point in arguing about it.  In TES threads you guys make snide remarks about how boring TES games are, and in Halo threads we make comments about how repetitious and uninspired Halo is.  This is just the happy order of things and there's really no need for intelligent discussion, because as has been proven, that gets us nowhere.

So let the trolling resume!

That's not exactly fair since Halo was a launch title.

I think the thing that burns me up about Halo's popularity is:

1)  People were salivating over the game like crazy before the Xbox's release, and for what?  What reason did they have?  They never played the game before.  They saw the commercials, but I don't even remember seeing any gameplay videos in the commercials.  Sheep...

2)  Though I never really experienced it, supposedly it was entertaining in mutliplayer.  Why?  Goldeneye and Perfect Dark came long before Halo, and I personally think they are far more fun and feature-rich.  and what was so special about Halo's multiplayer anyway?

3)  While this certainly shows my PC bias, there are and were far better shooters than Halo on the PC.  I still play Return to Castle Wolfenstein's spawn: Enemy Territory.  When Halo was released on the PC, it was so underwhelming it was astounding.  And yes, I realize it was released a couple years later but it doesn't matter.

I guess this truly is a matter of perspective and opinion. We're all fanboys I guess and no matter how much we deny it, we're all biased. I bought an Xbox over a year after it was released and had very little knowledge of Halo. I just knew that it was a huge seller. I picked it up and played it and loved it. I loved the story, the action and thought that those who nitpicked it (like the Library) were complete morons.

Just like how I think The Elder Scrolls are quite possibly the boring games in existence. Yeah you can say "zomg the art is great" and "look at the detail!" and even "its open ended and you can do what you want!". I get that.. yeah... Doesn't stop it from being dull as hell. I think we shouldn't even call them "games" but rather "Boredom simulators" or "A cure for insomnia". (Interesting note: Morrowind remains the only PC game that I grew so bored of during play, I went to bed and didn't even care that I didn't save)

Actually the first time I played Halo was when it came to the PC. I only bought my Xbox two years ago. I was ready to hate it, but I loved it.

I think Halo hit a big notch in the market b/c console market had literally around ZERO FPS's on the market -- especially on the X-Box. Consolers wanted a FPS. They saw Halo, the jumped.

Granted, I liked the first half of Halo SP. I thought it rocked. I was saying to myself, "Console gamers were on to something..." But, the second half of Halo, once The Flood arrived, destroyed everything I liked about the first half of Halo. I thought it turned into Serious Sam, all of a sudden. If that wasn't enough, throw in some repetitive looking cut-n-paste environments and some backtracking, and I pretty much had it w/ Halo.

I liked Halo's MP, but it wasn't anything great. Felt like standard MP stuff -- though, it had vehicles.

I agree w/ this completely.

When a new game from BethSoft comes out, I am willing to throw down $40-50 for the game. I can't say that for many new games, these days.

No other series I can think of will give me 100+ hours of gameplay right out the box, yet keeping me engrosses for such a time period. Morrowind and Oblivion did this for me.

I remember buying an Xbox with a friend of mine right after they came out.  After hearing such amazing things about Halo, and seeing all the previews with the awesome graphics and such I had to try it.  We both threw some money down and took it back to my house, where we sat and played all night.  We made it through the entire game, and even played multiplayer for a while.  I wanted to give the game a fair shake before I wrote it off, because I just kept thinking "I wonder when the good parts are coming."

Sure, it was kind of a fun game, but if one game defines "overrated" in the most perfect way, it is Halo.  It's nowhere near as good as Goldeneye or pretty much any decent PC FPS.  Halo PC was even worse, and Halo 2 sucked as far as I'm concerned.

We returned the Xbox and Halo the next day.
