Zomboid!
Quote
Project Zomboid is a Zombie Survival RPG. Here are some of its planned features:

-Retro-isometric style with plenty of zombie insides thrown in for good measure.
-A massive city and the surrounding areas to traverse, explore and loot.
-Open-ended sandbox world – survival is your only goal, and we’re sorry to tell you… you WILL die eventually.
-Get infected. How will you spend your final days? Will you have a heroic moment of self-sacrifice, or end up chewing your best friend’s throat out?
-Meet other survivors who you can join forces with, trade with, undertake missions for, or fight with for resources.
-Loot, salvage, and build what you need to survive the apocalypse, from food and medical supplies, to weapons, even just booze to help get you through the nights.
-Advanced item crafting allows you to use looted items to build weapons, traps, defenses, and many other things to help you survive.
-Character progression. Learn skills and perks to help your character face the challenges of survival.
-Starvation, illness, loneliness, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide, insanity, trust issues. There’s more to zombie survival than shooting zombie heads off.
-Join your friends and survive the apocalypse together in co-op multiplayer.
-The world changes the longer you survive; power plants fail, plunging the city into darkness and making batteries and tinned food prized commodities. The army rolls into the streets to perform ‘clean up operations’ and other gamechanging events occur the longer you survive.
-Play in your browser, or stand-alone, on PC, Mac and Linux.

It will be released Minecraft style, where there will be continual updates adding new features, weapons, game-play and locations.

So these guys have been having issues with funding. Google Checkout and Paypal apparently have trouble with people giving money in a "preorder" arrangement, ie with no actual product yet. Both companies are withholding funds from them now...blah.

And so now you can buy totally awesome games that just so happen to come with a preorder of Project Zomboid and all of its future updates.

Public tech demo released!

They only have a torrent up, but I mirrored the game here on Dropbox.

I gave it a quick spin and it looks like its going to shape up as a great zombie game/simulator. Time passes, you get hungry, you get injured, you get tired, you have to find food and shelter, barricade doors and windows, all that good zombie survival stuff. Definitely check it out. When they paid alpha is back up I'll have to go buy it.

I figure I will describe the game I just played.

I killed my wife with a pillow, she was only going to hold me back. (didn't want to do the tutorial again). Turning the oven on I leave the house behind. I scavenge enough food from neighboring houses to feed myself for weeks but can't find a single weapon other than my trusty hammer.

I eventually find what appears to be a supermarket with food all over. And a shotgun! Sadly the shotgun is being held by the person currently living inside the supermarket and he demands I leave. I'm in no position to argue so away I go.

Next door I find an apartment complex of some sort. Surely on one of those many floors I will find some sort of improved weapon! Barricading the only entrance I spent days searching that building, sleeping in the random bed on whatever floor I got tired on. Only two zombies in the whole place which I took care of easily. Not a single weapon to be found. Sure I found some shotgun shells but they aren't as useful without the gun part.

I decide to make my way back down the building, thinking that this might make a good place for a safehouse. Zombies will have trouble getting up these stairs. This is unfortunately my last thought as I rip down the barricade and open the door only to receive a point blank shotgun blast to the face. My neighbor apparently decided to follow and wait nearly a week for me to come back outside so he could kill me.

So, these dudes can't catch a break. First they had the whole issue with trying to get their money from Paypal and Google Checkout, now...Ouch.

I won’t beat around the bush. The Indie Stone have just suffered a major set-back. The Newcastle flat where Lemmy and Binky live and work was burgled this evening, and so far the clearest things taken are two computers and Lemmy’s credit card.

Project Zomboid was regularly backed up from machine to machine, but rarely – sadly and infuriatingly – externally. We have lost an awful lot of work. Mash and Binky don’t even know this has happened yet.

Holy shit. That's pretty bad. And that really sucks for those guys... I can't imagine losing nearly all your work due to a robbery.

Wow.  No off-site backups.  Ouch is right.

That's not even difficult to do now, with cloud storage.  You can do it free on Skydrive with a Windows Live ID.  We used to take home a case of tapes back in the 1800s, er, 1980s.  :P
