Free for a year? Shouldnt that have been apart of PSN in the first place? They are expecting people to pay for their fuck up now?

Identity theft protection should have been part of PSN?

So-called identity theft is fraud against financial institutions.  I've so far scoffed at the idea of having to pay to protect banks and credit-card companies from fraud.  I guess it depends on where you live.  Here, as long as you're on top of bank and credit-card statements, the cost of "identity theft" is way less than the cost of "identity-theft protection".  For example, the most you ever have to pay is $50 per credit card.  (Someone could illicitly charge $10,000 to one of your accounts, and the most you would have to pay is $50.)  That's federal law, so the protection can't be signed away.  Just don't ever (ever) use debit cards.  I was gong to say "online", but stores, gas stations and other places you swipe them can make them vulnerable as well.  I think until they enjoy the same ironclad protections credit cards do, they're best left unactivated in a drawer.  If you're forced to use them, just watch your account activity closely.  You only have 2 business days to report fraud before it can cost you a lot more than $50.

May 31st is the new due date.

I wonder how much this hurt sales of some of the bigger games (Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, that Socom thing, Brink tomorrow). I would imagine the result isn't pretty.

It has definitely had some impact.  I was contemplating purchasing Portal 2 (it was on sale this week for $40) and I was gonna pick up the PS3 version but then decided against it since I wouldn't be able to do co-op.

At least it won't affect my purchase of LA Noire since it's SP only.

I've also changed the subject title of the thread to accurately reflect the downtime now.

I wonder which will end up being more costly in the end, the 360 Red Ring fiasco or this?

Getting the PS3 version of Portal 2 gives you a free PC copy, right? If you have a PC good enough to run it might well be worth it.

This is true. However, to "unlock" the PC version you need to tie your PSN account to your Steam account...through your PS3. So right now you can't do even that.

Yeah. That's how I bought Portal 2. Luckily I got it on the release date and linked my accounts that day. Had I waited until the next, I would only have access to the PS3 version. A lot of people went that route because it seemed novel to have a copy for each even if you only intended to play it on the PC (there were also a lot of deals out there to make the costs essentially equal). They waited a day and sort of have been screwed.

So it could be up soonish. Mandatory firmware update is live. PSN itself is still down at the moment, though.

Its going up!

Looks like it has started, from the Northeast of the country.  Good news for the PS3 crowd.

I'm probably gonna get Super Stardust HD and LittleBigPlanet.  I have Wipeout HD (not Fury though) but I barely play it.  Don't get me wrong, Wipeout HD is a great game, but extremely challenging.  I've already got inFamous as well.

I guess for the PSP I'll get Pursuit Force and either LBP or ModNation, since I have Killzone Liberation.

Hurray for free stuff, but this expands my backlog significantly, especially since I just picked up Portal 2 (still shrink wrapped) and I'm getting LA Noire tomorrow as well.

Nice!  Yeah, I'll probably go Dead Nation and Wipeout....seeing as I already own and never play Little Big Planet and InFamous.

You complain loudly on the internet.

EDIT: Thats basically what I've seen, anyway. I mean Sony is in kind of a hard spot when offering stuff. Someone is bound to have all or most of whatever they offer. They can't give store credit because PSN accounts are free and lots of people have multiple accounts, which would give them a much bigger bonus.

Maybe they'll have some cool stuff during the free month everyone gets of PSN+.

I imagine the freebies are only for existing PSN customers.  If new customers can take advantage of this, it's the best time to buy a PS3 ever.

Umm...

Does the password reset get verified via email? I'm guessing that if hackers just need your email address and date of birth then there's no email verification afterwards which is really really bad on Sony's part.

The only e-mail you get is notification of a password change not a verification e-mail that requires any action. It's pretty lax, no real science behind it. Although supposedly there's a link in there to take action if you hadn't authorized the password change.

Apparently, this exploit only affects people resetting their PSN passwords on PSN websites and not on the PS3 password reset prompt that came up when they partially reactivated the online services.

So, if you reset the password via your PS3 when you tried to sign in you should be alright.

So I got an email from Sony telling me to reset my password, and detailing their compensation offers.  Sounds nice, except for the fact that I don't have a PSN account.  Interesting.  The email address is Sony_Online_Entertainment@soe.innovyx.net.  The "Reset Your Password" link is https://account.station.sony.com/cam/resetRequired/resetPassword!input.action?theme=soe.  Looks legit to me.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Do you have a SOE account for any of Sonys online games? Everquest, PoxNora, Infantry, etc? Its separate from PSN, though that email addy look strange.

Ahaha!  Yes, it does look like a phishing scam.  No, it really is Sony.  I keep seeing this all over, and so far this site is the best source I can link.  So they get hacked to shit, then send emails through a 3rd party that few have ever heard of.  Nice going, morons.  Really build that trust.

And that still doesn't explain why I got the email.  No, I don't have anything to do with online access to anything by Sony.

So just an update. Originally the Welcome Back program was supposed to end today. However it has been extended until 9am Pacific on July 5th.

So if you put off collecting your free games, get your ass in gear. I was able to grab all mine just the other day with no timeouts or errors so it should be easy enough for everyone.
