I think Square Enix just doesn't get it

And by "it" I mean everything in the current gaming market. Evidence? They're supposedly making another MMO. Maybe they think after FFXIV that they can get it right this time, but MMOs are not cheap and people aren't exactly begging them for a new one. If they want easy cash, they have other obvious venues with Kingdom Heart and the FF remakes that people are just dying for. After FFXIII, XIV, what I've seen of that FF Versus game, and now this I'm pretty sure Square just has blinders on and are doing whatever they want. I guess that's cool, but you can't make giant expensive games like that when your fanbase is fading away.

That's my impression too.  FF XII was the last game of theirs I really liked.  I'd have to go back to Secret of Mana for another one I liked nearly as well.  They lost me with FF VII and beyond.  I feel like a helpless slave to the plot lines in most of them.  I thought they had started to turn themselves around with XII, but then XIII happened.  So yeah, they do whatever they want, without factoring in commercial response.  That's an admirable attitude, for starving artists.

Whatever this new MMO is I they ought to give it for free to anyone who actually paid for FFXIV.

If they learn from the mistakes in their past MMO games it might be decent. It's just such a risky genre to get into - there are a few heavyweights that are really hard to drive users from. But on the bright side there hasn't been much innovation lately.
