So the editor of a magazine here in Pakistan, sent me an e-mail, asking me to do an article for him on graphic novels, and why Pakistan doesn't have them etc.

Yay.

So umm... you guys have any ideas? The last one I read was Coraline. Any essential reading I should be catching up on? If you guys have anything, throw it at me. I really want to do a good job here. The money isn't it... it is just fun for me.

From my research so far, it seems that publishers aren't willing to take the risk. There are some aspiring comic book writers/artists here, and one almost got his book out the door, but the publisher backed out at the last second.

What do you mean Pakistan doesn't have them? Does that mean Pakistan doesn't produce its own graphic novels and what is read is American or do graphic novels not exist at all?

Pakistan doesn't have a Pakistani graphic novel. Every country seems to have them.

Thanks Que. There is less competition in this part of the world, so it is easier for me to find work like this. It isn't paying much, but it isn't about the money.

I'd be curious about... well, how the exposure happens. It seems like people there are into the same stuff that's familiar to me here even though there's less access and certainly less of a communal culture built around it, locally (or at least that's what I'm guessing, maybe I'm wrong), so that's what I'd be curious about. What avenues do you take to get into this kind of thing? How does comic art flow into that part of the world? What's popular? How do like-minded people get together to enjoy it and talk about it?

I spoke to three people today, and that's some of what we talked about. Not the "how do like-minded people get together" bit -- which is interesting, and I will definitely ask now for sure, but how do people here gain access to that form of art. Thanks!

Actually Que, when I was a kid, all the stores sold comic books and stuff by the bucketloads here. The economy of this country is collapsing, and you can hardly see a comic book sold here.

Regarding the community aspect of it, basically people meet through facebook and stuff. Also, surprisingly lots of people are into comic books.

The people I interviewed were local TV and print magazine artists, and they were all passionate about this stuff.

Xessive, I respect your opinion on comic book art. I remember a few times you pointed out flaws etc in comic book covers that I hadn't noticed.

As a graphics designer, and an artist, how would you rate this dude's work? (I think it is awesome, but I don't have your critical eye).

Musibat-Khan has a unique style. It's like Fantasy-Funk or Funk-Fantasy! I like it!

He's got a good handle on colour and drawing principles, his penciling needs a little bit of work but his painting is impressive. Going through his gallery I can clearly see a chronological progression in his style. He's growing and developing techniques with each artwork.

Judging from his most recent work, he's developed a knack for perspective angles and combining brush strokes.

I'd love to see his interpretations of other intellectual properties i.e. what would Khan's Batman look like?

Yea I really love the fact that he has his own style and stuff. I am going to ask him that. In fact, I will commission it. I will tell him to do his own thing of Batman for me.

So I am going to start writing my piece soon. The problem is that it is a 1000 words and I have like a gazillion things that are interesting.

I've talked to artists, proprietors of comic book stores, Pak celebs who happen to be fans etc. It has been an awesome few days. I wish I could fill a few pages.
