El Shaddai
« on: Monday, August 22, 2011, 04:21:15 AM »
I thought we had a thread on this but I couldn't find it through searching. Anyway, this was that mysticism themed game from Ignition entertainment. Its a God of War-esque combat game with some platforming thrown in. The art style is very original to say the least and its varied as well. I know Belmont was into it, I watched him play the demo and definitely looked like it played pretty well, challenging even.

Here is the Gametrailers review which gave it a 8.6.

I'll have to watch that later. I'm really curious about it even though I should stop being curious about games.

I really wanted to get this when it came out, but the money I was going to use for it is going towards something else.  I'm hoping to pick it up in the next week or two though.

Hell, that looks way better than the last time I saw it. That's... that's not fair at all is what that is. Ugh.

This is a bad sign...

Oh. I totally remember Giant Bomb doing something an early Quick Look on this months ago and being totally into it. I never heard anything about the game before or though and it just sorta fell off my radar.

I'm happy it turned out well since it seemed to have some potential. I can imagine that this will be one of those games that drops in price pretty quickly but also become hard to find almost as quick. It seems like it'll have that mixture of obscurity and quality that fits that sort of mold. The trick will be to catch it right at that price drop.

Well, now seems to be the time. I grabbed it for $30.

I haven't given it much time, maybe an hour or so. So far I definitely feel like the game is secondary to everything else. Which isn't to say that anything feels bad, it just feels... dated. The game would've been more impressive from a gameplay standpoint like... 5 years ago. It's just pretty simple combat. Functional, but simple, and from what I gather you've basically seen all of it within ten minutes. I can see that getting a bit boring.

The visuals are amazing and are clearly the reason to play the game. It's a shame that the opening area is really, really lame. It's like... icy snowy something or other and it just doesn't look great. But then immediately after that you start seeing awesome stuff, and when it's awesome, it's pretty awesome. The music is great too, and the story is... interesting. I haven't seen enough to say more, but I think that's going to be a strength rather than a weakness, though it might be somewhat dependent upon familiarity with the source material.

Anyone else ever snag this?
