AKA things i didn't expect to read after getting home from work today.

WOW.

I'd say this probably means a poor outlook for his health.

That's really too bad; this might not bode well for Apple.  Say what you want about the guy - he knew what he was doing.

Apple is no better or worse than Microsoft in the mid-90's, or what Google will inevitably become.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Apple in the coming years.  It was no coincidence that Apple surged when Steve Jobs returned.

And Pug, yes he is very ill.  He has pancreatic cancer, pretty much one of the most deadly kinds.

I think Cobra was more referring to the  level of control he seems to demand rather than comparing the two on ethical grounds.

*edit* Improper usage.

Apple will be fine it's not like he left the company. It's unfortunate to see him in such a weak state.

Comparing him to Stalin on whatever grounds is retarded.

Yeah, Stalin had a mustache!

I hope he pulls through these trying times. Pancreatic Cancer is a tough one, as far as Cancers go.

I'd say Apple's trajectory has been long decided for at least 18-24 months.

Like the guy or not, it's very difficult to ignore his influence on current first world life.  I was thinking about that very point as I was walking in to work today. I go to put my lunch in the break room refrigerator and there sits one of our truck drivers using an iPad.  Guy probably couldn't find his way around a computer if he had to.  But there he sits, getting right along using this device.  he's even using the back portion of the box it came in as a "case".

Part marketing, part minimalist aesthetic, part innovation.  I don't agree with Apple's plan entirely, but Jobs literally took a company that was in a world of shit and turned it back around into arguably the most prominent tech company in the world.

As a human being, I feel terrible for him.  Assuming a return of the pancreatic cancer is his major health issue, his end will likely be wrought with intense pain.  I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.

My "retarded" reply was hyperbole in response to gpw's post.  That someone would know what he's doing doesn't mean he's improving things for anyone.  It should be obvious, but since you think Apple shits rainbows, I thought I should spoon-feed it to you.

I won't deny Jobs' considerable influence on the technology industry, but what a snake.  Check this out:

Quote
When he was 23, he fathered a daughter named Lisa with Chrisann Brennan. He refused to acknowledge paternity of the child, going so far as to sign an affidavit swearing that he couldn’t father a child because he was sterile.

Lisa’s mother raised their child on welfare–even though Jobs was already quite wealthy by that time.

He did eventually acknowledge his daughter. He would have had to, eventually. Jobs got married in 1990 and fathered three children.

That is just lower than low.  The article goes on about other instances of him being a complete bastard, but that is by far the worst.

Yeah I read that article yesterday.  He had a lot of personal failings, for sure.  The way he treated Woz was pretty terrible, too.

People make snarky comments on the Internet whether they have some vendetta or not. We all know this. I have no great depth of feeling about Jobs personally despite my general dislike of his company, but I made the personality comment because I thought it was funny. Okay, Cobra took a potshot at a rich jerk. So what? The world isn't going to end, but the self-righteousness in here is amazing to me. I'd just like to point out how often complaints about other people and opinionated bullshit exactly like what you're reading now gets tossed around on IRC before anyone thinks it's their job to show up on the boards and defend anyone, much less a man who's lived the well-documented life of a complete asshole.

Just let it go. Our feelings on these matters don't need to lead to personal derision.

Cobra decides to be a troll, then accuses me of trying to pick a fight because I disagreed with his comment? Yeah ok Que...

I find it amazing how polarizing Apple can be. I think Apple is a great company doing great things and people often think that I'm an Apple zealot because I won't hide those opinions. But the only Apple product I own is a used iPod from five years ago and I have no plans to buy anything from them in the future. Why is it that any Apple compliment turns you into a raging fanboy and any insult turns you into a blinded hater? It's just a company like any other, good elements and bad.

Sounds like The Game of Thrones.

Hahahahaha.  All signs really do point to Jobs being a Lannister.  That is, a horrible human being. True or not?  No idea.

That said, who gives a fuck? The guy brought Apple back from the brink and ended up coming up with some very influential products.  Sure, hard-drive based MP3 players were around before the iPod, but they fucking sucked.  And sure, touchscreen smartphones were around before the iPhone but they were clunky as fuck and had little to no mass market appeal.  The success of the iPhone was certainly the driving force behind the accelerated and heightened development of Android and the competition between the two systems is certainly where all the innovation is going to come from in the market for the immediate future. Good for everyone if these clowns can stop suing each other over retarded patents regarding UI interactions that probably shouldn't have been granted in the first place (to be fair: it's business, it's going to happen if they can get their hands on a patent).  Everybody pretty much wins and there's now a smartphone on the market that my mom could most likely utilize every feature of (RIM had this down, but it just wasn't clicking).

Beyond that, who gives a fuck?  The company has some good products but also have a lot of practices that many people don't like and/or despise.  It's like arguing Ford vs. Dodge.  Some motherfuckers want a Ram, some want an F-150.

In the final scene he is being swamped by Androids, then the new CEO Tim Cook (the guy with the rainbow since he is gay) appears on the scene to help him.

Ah.  I thought it might be Tim Cook, but the rainbow threw me off.  If I had known he was gay then it would have been more obvious.

Pancreatic cancer.  He's toast.  I may not like the guy, but I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.

He reminds me a lot of my dad before he died.  Really skinny, generally unkempt... just bad looking.  My dad didn't have cancer though.

Holy shit, he looks awful. When did that happen? I thought I'd seen him looking more or less normal not all that long ago.

That vid was awesome, too. Also, is it wrong of me to say that it makes perfect sense for a gay man to take the reigns of Apple?
