Suddenly, I feel less than enthusiastic about this game.

It's Raven -- so, how bad could it really turn out?

Most of their games are -- at the very least -- good.

I am not sure how well the sci-fi/fantasy elements will work with the game.

Also, Quake IV was pretty bad. I know a lot of people here like it -- which I am surprised by and  will never understand -- because it was a really poorly made shooter that was totally unremarkable and quite before its time. On the other hand, the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games were some of my favorites, so I am still interested to see what they come up with here, even if I am not sure about the direction they are taking.

I don't get why you hate Quake IV so much.  I liked it more than Doom III, personally.  Was it a milestone in gaming?  Of course not, but I found it fun and that's all that really matters.

As far as this Raven-developed Wolfenstein game, I think the concept sounds stupid.  Sure, the Wolf games have always been B.J. against the Nazis dabbling in the occult.  Still, at least you played in a conventional manner.  Now there's going to be magical powers you can use?  I'm not so sure this is going to work.

The polygon models and textures look like they are from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault or some other FPS game of that era.  The other effects are nice though.  Here's to hoping they bring on Nerve or Splash Damage to make the multiplayer portion because Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are easily my favorite multiplayer games ever.

Overall, I don't really like Raven much.  Except for Quake IV, I've always had a lot of bugs and crashes in Raven games, and always felt they were technically inferior to other games around at the same time, especially in terms of the quality of the polygon models.  I've also never really forgiven them for the misleading multiplayer demo they released for Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix.

I agree.

Well, Raven did do Heretic/Hexen games...maybe they can find a way to make it work?
I don't know.

Oh, yeah -- RTCW MP was awesome and so was anything with Enemy Territory written on it (Quake Wars and Wolfenstein: ET).

Double Helix was okay, until the jungle levels. Around there, I quit. It was not easy.

Eh, I might get it just because it is Wolfenstein.  Doesn't look all that spectacular though.

This game will bomb simply because it is coming out in a crowded holiday season, and it just isn't *that* big of a franchise. Something like this should always come out well before the holiday season where there isn't a crowd.

Pug, what else is coming out in August that might be worth looking at?

Wolfenstein MP portion has been leaked out on the Internet already.

Now, here's what Peter Sokal of Id software said.

Quote
Regarding the Wolfenstein MP Leak
Tue Aug 04, 2009 1:13 pm

It was brought to our attention on Friday, 7/31 that a build of the Wolfenstein Multiplayer was leaked and is now being distributed illegally through breach of NDA and mirrors posted on the internet. I must warn anyone involved that Activision’s legal department is taking this matter very seriously.

Same applies here on the forums. If you mention that you have acquired this build, you are openly admitting to illegally obtaining the build and will be banned straight away. You have been warned.

With regards to any footage, screenshots and comments posted here and all over the internet, an important thing to keep in mind is that these were not created from a build of the game that was final or consumer ready. There’s nothing we can do about it now except continue working on the game.

Wolfenstein has been designed to retain elements that are the core of the Wolfenstein multiplayer experience, such as distinct classes and objective-based teamplay. We are also introducing new elements to the game with the Veil powers and persistent upgrades. After release we’ll make our SDK available, as well as release updates to address feedback from the competitive community.

We look forward to seeing you online upon release.

Thus far people seem pretty pleased with it.  The response has been fairly positive on the whole.

From what I heard, if you liked how solid RTCW was, you'll like Wolf 2009.
If that's the case, I'mma have to get Wolf 09 when it drops in price.

Wolfenstein for all THREE systems sells a total of around 106K copies.

Quote
GameSpot reports that the highest selling version was the 360 at about 59,000 units, significantly less than Fossil Fighters at the number 10 spot of the NPDs with 92,000. The PS3 version hit 30,000, and the PC version sold 17,000. This puts it at 106,000 units sold, but the good news is it only includes five days for the August reporting period. It certainly could have had a stronger showing, but those figures aren't terrible for such a short period. However, most games sell the strongest in their first week, so it's doubtful we'll see it show up in next month's NPDs.

Yeah, there's a place near my parents place that fixes them. Apparently they get in a ton of them for a variety of reasons.

For a few days there I was almost ready to buy this game new, but decided to wait. I just tried the demo and while I would still like to get it, I think about $20 will be the point where I grab it.

Patch 1.11 Released for Wolfenstein - PC Version.

Quote

The 1.11 patch fixes these items in the single player campaign.

   1. Fixed issue resulting in user receiving gamex86.dll error
   2. Fixed issue that caused crashes when users broke numerous breakable objects during a Single Player Campaign
   3. Fixed issue that corrupted a save file after restarting a mission
   4. Updated the Wolf2.exe with a SecuROM fix that prevented users from launching the executable properly

Old save games will still work with the new patch.

Be sure to have already upgraded to version 1.1 before installing the new patch.

Installation is easy. Simply download the installer and double click to run the file.

So, I've had very mixed feelings about this game over the past several weeks.  Overall, it's pretty good if it's what you're into. The open world aspect is kind of stupid and pointless, and the game can be very cheap at times (there's an enemy which is invisible and can kill you in like three claw swipes.  So, guess what happens when you're fighting someone else and that enemy decides to join in?), but overall it's pretty fun.  Personally, I'd recommend waiting for it to be cheaper.

Yeah, that was basically my impression as well. It's a really fun $20-$25 game. The open world thing is pretty pointless because you are confined to certain regions at certain points.

But I enjoyed the game. It's fun. Just don't expect greatness.

I got this game for my birthday.  At first I thought it was pretty terrible both gameplay and technology-wise, but after playing it awhile I kind of dig it.  The single player isn't amazing, but it isn't bad.  It's fun enough to keep forging on.  I haven't beaten the game yet because one of the final bosses is total bullshit, but I'll get there eventually.  I haven't tried multi yet, but I can see it being fun.  Graphically it is horrible though.  Imagine it being like a beta build of Doom III or something.  Except having crappier models and textures.
