If you have/make a free Onlive account, it seems you can now try the demo for this. Which...kinda sucks for me. Oh well.

In better news, they are now running a Kickstarter. $10 gets you a DRM-free copy of the game when it released. I might kick in on this one (and the Double Fine one which I keep putting off for some reason).

Buying direct from them only gets you a Steam key as well as direct DRM free downloads. I don't believe it will register on GoG.

I'm trying to decide if I want the GoG one or not. I don't really care about the Steam key, but having Win/Mac/Linux available would be nice if I ever mess with those. But then the mini soundtrack and stuff on GoG is more immediately interesting/usable but only has the Win version.

Between Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2 I have absolutely no time for this, but the game looks amazing. I started tracking it after PCG UK did an hour long podcast about it. Wish I had time for this.

My first game I don't think I got very far. Only made it to sector 3.  Things went ok until I had some fires break out all over the ship due to solar flares. I vented the O2 to put out the fires. 2 crew member died trying to repair the O2 system so we could breathe again. Seeing as how I only had 3 crew...that was a pretty big hit. A few jumps later a slaver pirate demanded a crew member...and I only had one. So I fought, and won! Before he could be destroyed he offered me my own slave. I accepted and got a rockman thats immune to fire and has more health, but he walks slower. More jumps, more battles. I happened across a couple distress beacons and gave aid, I found a couple stores where you can sell equipment and buy new stuff. You can even repair your hull there. Sadly my run was cut short when the rockman was the only crew member left alive. I was up against a ship with a weapon that could disable my equipment. Must have been an EMP or something. I managed to keep returning fire to disable his guns but fires ran through my ship. I managed to blow up the enemy but the damage was already done. Vent O2? Good idea, except the door controls were down, and the O2 regen was down, and the fires were eating up what O2 I had. Rockman tried his best...RIP, pebble buddy.

So yeah, this game is pretty boss and if you don't buy it you should feel bad.

PROTIP: Cherish your missiles. You won't just stumble across many so only use them when you know they will do the most good.

Well I suppose I should talk a bit about how it actually plays. It looks like a lot to learn but its all laid out well and I picked it up pretty fast. There is a tutorial that does a good job of explaining most everything, but if you've played a space game before or know even a little about Star Trek then you already know pretty much how everything works.

Making jumps puts you in new situations, mostly fighting other ships. Shields block laser weapons and missiles seem to fire through for the most part (though at one point one of my missiles was blocked or shot down or something). You can set the weapons to autofire or you can handle the shots manually. Why would you do that? Well maybe you want your laser to fire its 3 shot burst to momentarily take down the enemy shield, and then you can fire whatever else to make the hit. You can target different rooms of the enemy ship so you usually concentrate on disabling their weapons or shields first. Depending on if you've upgraded your sensors you can also see the enemy dudes running around repairing things.

Blowing up enemies gets you stuff, from drone scraps, missiles, sometimes a weapon, and always generic "scrap" which you can use to upgrade your ship. You can boost the general power of the ship which is always handy since every subsystem uses power. You can upgrade existing systems to improve them, such as 3x O2 generation, or an auto-pilot that will dodge incoming fire even if no one is at the helm.

Your ships "health" does not recharge. If you're lucky and you have the scrap to spare you can find stores that can repair your hull. If you're short on scrap you can even sell equipment or cargo to pay for it, or just to unload stuff you no longer need. Stores also sell other upgrades to your ship, like drone controls and the like.

Moving crew around the ship is important. Not only do they put out fire and fix damage, having them man stations can improve their usefulness. Weapons reload faster if someone is manning the weapons bay, for example. They can gain experience in these areas making them even better at those jobs. Of course you have to keep them alive long enough to see the benefits of that...

After a battle you can sit where you are for a little while, something I didn't really realize right away. It might be a good idea to repair stuff and make sure your rooms have O2 in them before venturing on. You can't hang around forever though. You are being chased by rebels and they show up on your star map at they are searching, so it pushes you to keep moving forward even if you aren't totally prepared for whats ahead. EXCITING!

OH yeah, almost forgot. You can play this almost like a turn based game. Pause the battle as much as you like, issues some orders, unpause and watch them play out.

Ok so apparently I got one thing wrong. You *can* sit and let your O2 recharge and make repairs. The rebel forces only move when you jump, according to one persons report.

Yeah I got to sector 5 this morning. Except I sorta beelined it and was wiped out almost right away due to being completely underpowered. Had a nice crew, though. But this enemy had a couple drones and some EMP thing and disabled practically everything. My crew had to fight fires instead of fixing things and...it didnt end well for them. Unlocked a new ship, though, so thats cool.

I find the difficulty with the game to be kind of random.  I have been wiped out after my first jump because I ran into a powerful enemy. 

As a result, it's really hard to determine how far you can get in any particular playthrough.  It's kind of the luck of the draw.

Also, I hate nebula sectors.

Had my best run yet, but ran into troubles yet again with boarders. After the first one I was like "gah, I forgot to upgrade my doors!" So I upgrade my doors...good. Very next encounter is more boarders. HA! SUCK VACU...wait whats going on? They my doors aren't slowing them at all.

Those fuckers warped into my door control room and disabled them! It was all downhill from there.

That game I happened to pick up an Anti-Bio beam, which was pretty snazzy. Does no damage to the ship but kills the crew. So I was getting a good amount of scrap and fuel from not blowing ships up.

I was one upgrade away from getting the fully upgraded ship achievement but...grr, just short on scrap. I think to do that I just have to make a run specifically for that. Spend it on nothing but the upgrades.

So I want to unlock more ships or even just the Layout B of the starter ship, which I read was a pretty awesome layout. You have to complete 2 of 3 achievements to unlock it. These are the achievements:

1.) Have 6 different aliens as crew members. Since you start off with 3 humans, you need to pick up 5 new crew, all different. This is SUPER luck based.
2.) Get your ship down to one health point, then fully repair it. This also seems really hard to do.
3.) Fully outfit your ship. That means you have to buy the Cloak, the Teleporter, and the Drone Control. This is doable if you save your scrap and hit a store selling them all, which seems to be fairly frequent.

i decided my next couple runs I would dedicate to these tasks. Don't spend scrap on ANYTHING. Save save save, then attempt to do the last two. So thats what I do...save save save.

To do number 2 I was going to get in a fight, take down my shields until the damage was done, then warp away. I got lucky though and found a minefield right next to a store node. Blew up the bad guy there and just let the asteroids hit me. The asteroids are pretty regular and only do 1 damage so it was simple to keep an eye on. Hard part is making sure I could jump away when I needed to. The asteroids were causing all sorts of fire and damaged systems across my ship and if it took out my engines or control rooms then I would be toast. Luckily that didn't happen so a quick warp and ~50 scrap later = achievement unlocked.

I had not picked up any crew so far so #1 was out. But sure, why not try for #3 while I'm at it? I had scrap and this store was selling the upgrades, so I bought 2 of them. One more and I'd have it! Even selling my weapons wouldn't have given me enough. I was about 30 shy even if I sold my weapons to do it. Damn. Well, maybe I can collect it in the surrounding nodes and come back. Good plan and I did collect it, but by the time I did the Rebels had caught up and I couldn't go back to that store. I had to move forward and hope I'd come across another one selling that.

Eventually I did hit on that other store so I bought the thing! BAM! Achievement unlocked! New Ship Layout Unlocked! HAPPY! But...my poor crew. These little badasses were awesome, but I had to sell a weapon to pay for the upgrade. I still had my missiles, but not too many in stock. I could have given up on them but no, we would fight to the end. Luckily a lot of the nodes I hit has people bribing me to leave them alone, or just nothing of interest in them. I was starting to run out of fuel. I used my last fuel to jump into a store to see what they had. With all the scrap i had left I figured I maybe could hire on all that crew. No luck. I decided I wanted to see what running out of fuel did. I bought one last fuel and jumped...

Into an asteroid field. We were not going to drift endlessly. Fires everywhere, damage everywhere, no air....it wasn't pretty.

So yeah, crazy ride. I never expected I would be able to do both achievements in a single run. Got me the Red-Tail layout to try. More weapons! More crew! More chaos!

Maiden voyage of the Red-Tail was my best run so far even though I started it just to "check out" the ship. Weapons guy levels up really fast when he's got 4 weapons to fire right from the start. One of the starting crew is a Zolton (sp?) which means he gives you one free power for whatever station you stick him on. Just a nice little bonus that gives you a little flexibility in the beginning.

So yeah, got all the way to sector 7! But Im not sure what Im doing wrong along the way. My ship needs to be WAY beefier if I'm going to even hope to take on the last boss, and in Sector 7 ships with 3 shields started showing up. Its so hard to decide where to spend upgrades vs buying in shops.

I managed to unlock another ship as well, the Stealth ship. Its a random encounter and you need an Engi on your crew to get the correct response to start a little quest. But yeah, unlocked it! Woo!

I also found out what happens when you run out of fuel. Can't jump but you can sit and wait for someone to come along...and watch as the rebel fleet closes in. You can turn a beacon on (I missed that the first couple waits) which seems to cause some sort of event to occur. Had to kill some dudes to get just a little fuel to continue. Happened to me twice!

If you're playing on Steam, they currently have a beta patch up.

Changelog 1.02

Compatibility Changes:
    Older laptops experiencing "overly pixelated" or distorted images should now function
    MacBooks with ATI X1600 video cards will potentially function both in fullscreen and windowed. I do not have access to a MacBook with that video card, so if you're experiencing that problem please update me!
    Mac OS X version now implements Left-Ctrl+Left-Click to be equivalent to Right-Click


Fullscreen Changes:
    Fullscreen stretch now works differently and should be more effective at properly "stretching" to fill your screen
    Monitors that support 2560x1440 should be properly scaling and look much better (I'm jealous)
    Monitors with resolutions less than 1280x720 may now function in Fullscreen Stretched depending on your OpenGL support
    A more elaborate manual mode is available for tweaking your desired resolution effect within settings.ini


Additional Video Settings:
    V-Sync can be activated within options mode. Depending on your system, you still might need to force it on or off from your video card control panel as well.
    Frame limiting is also available from the options. Between the two (V-Sync vs. Frame Limiting), pick the one that works best for you to balance performance and cpu use.


Other Bugs:
    Start Crash Fix: Sometimes unidentified USB devices could cause FTL to fail to start
    Removed bugged weapon from the secret sector
    Moving crewmembers will still teleport assuming they are in the room of their final destination
    Killing the crew of an enemy ship will count as defeating it for stats
    Selling the Zoltan Energy shield will no longer be bugged
    Federation Ship will properly unlock on victory (and will unlock retroactively for those that experienced this bug)
    Secret Cruiser Type B stealth imagery has been fixed
    Fixed situation where a defense drone could become permanently powered
    Energy Shield can no longer be damaged while jumping, preventing it from properly recharging
    Fixed: Ion Storm and Nebula effects would disappear at beacons where you leave behind an enemy
    Saving in sector maps can no longer sometimes cause you to skip a sector
    Excess error message repeats removed
    Typos corrected in tooltips/weapons/events
Non-beta patch should be out next week for everyone.

I've started playing it on Easy, as I find the Kestral (starting ship), woefully inadequate and ill-equipped to get too far.  By sheer luck I've made it to sector 7 on normal, but was still terribly underpowered.

I'm on a really good run right now using the Kestral on easy.  I'm on the final sector and am in the 'last stand'.  My ship is reasonably powerful... will have to see if I successfully complete the game.  I've got a fully upgraded shield, four weapons (2 starting; the ion cannon; and a powerful missile; don't have enough system power to use all four at the same time though.)  I've got the drone system installed; most of my crew have two stars (gets a bonus), and I have three extra crew members to deal with repairs and boarders.

Normal gets rough pretty fast. I've made it to the boss with the Kestrel but it's hard to keep up as the boss throws a lot of stuff at you all at once. Most of my strategy going in was using a teleporter and a fire beam to kill crews so that I ended up with more loot.

I switch between normal and easy a lot though and have completely a few runs on easy. I feel like almost every time on easy I get so much gear that by the end it's fairly, well, easy. Right now most of my runs are using the Stealth Ship and that's interesting because you don't start with a shield and have to rely on picking your targets. I had a really good system where I would cloak through the first parts of the fight to build up my weapons and have the enemy would waste their first volley. After decloaking I would typically cripple a ship beyond repair and then finish them off with my second volley, but I messed up and traded in a weapon without realizing it's replacement required more energy. By the time I was in a fight my whole flow was off and I got overwhelmed in sector 7.
