Would you like your voice to be heard by SOPA supporters?
« on: Tuesday, December 27, 2011, 09:11:03 AM »
I love this idea: in the same vein as the autodialers that politicians and schools use to give a list of people a telephone message, a site/service exists that lets you record a message and have that message heard by supporters of the SOPA bill (among other things). $10 fee.

The White House is opposed to DNS interference.  This is good news.  Looks like the DNS manipulation is being removed from SOPA and PIPA.  So even if these pass, it will be more of a legal issue than a technical one.  Not a full victory, but a significant step in the right direction.

Edit:  Well, it looks now like good news all around.  SOPA has been shelved.

Quote
[Update]: House Oversight Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) says that Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has told him that he won't bring SOPA up to a vote in the House, shelving the proposed legislation for the time being.

In a statement, Issa said, "While I remain concerned about Senate action on the Protect IP Act [PIPA], I am confident that flawed legislation will not be taken up by this House. Majority Leader Cantor has assured me that we will continue to work to address outstanding concerns and work to build consensus prior to any anti-piracy legislation coming before the House for a vote."

I've read this on several sites.  The quote here made me choose it as my source.

I think SOPA and PIPA are going to be dead after what happened today.  Tons of websites doing protests and major news coverage.  Supposedly representatives' and senators' offices were flooded with calls today.

I think the fight is far from over but hope still floats.

I believe Darrell Issa is still sorting out his OPEN Act. He will propose it as an alternative to SOPA, which he openly opposes.

I am open to the idea of anti-piracy legislation, if only because such legislation seems inevitable and I would rather something else get passed than risk SOPA or PIPA would stay smoldering ready to pass at any time given favorable conditions.  But I am vehemently against legislation that so clearly supports big business and is obvious evidence of congressional cronyism.  Under SOPA and PIPA, businesses wouldn't even have to go through courts to take down sites and services!  That is totally absurd.

These guys keep topping themselves. I don't know how they do it.
I have no idea how anyone could one-up a public declaration of bribing politicians in exchange for monopoly rights, but maybe they can pull it off.
