Board downtime: Mar 29, 9PM-Midnight, CST
« on: Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 09:18:54 AM »
We've been getting some notices that the hosting company is going to move servers. I guess they got bought out or something. Anyway, they are doing the switchover tomorrow night, 9PM to midnight, central time. The boards will be down during this time.

The wrinkle is they say we manage our DNS through domaincontrol.com and we have to update it or something, but none of us have heard of it. So we're not really sure where thats coming from or what thats going to mean. So if we aren't back up right away you now know why. But since we don't use that site for DNS I think this is some weird mixup and things should be fine. Im optimistic like that.

I have a ticket open with them so will hopefully get some answers shortly.

domaincontrol.com are the nameservers of GoDaddy. Once the servers are moved and there is a new IP then Pyro (or whoever else has access to his account) can make the change at GoDaddy. Alternatively, you can give the info to the GoDaddy account to your host and they will make the changes themselves (as stated in the email you forwarded to me).

I wouldn't do the second option, though I think GoDaddy does have some way to add domain administrators to your account so you aren't giving out your main account information.  Then you could rescind it later.

But really you just need the new public IP of whatever the webserver is that they move it to.  Then you have to just replace the current host (A) record for www.overwritten.net (and probably overwritten.net) to that IP address.  Easy.

The only thing that concerns me about the move is the database connection.  What is the name of the database server going to be?  Is it staying the same?  Is the database account username and password going to be the same?

Anyway, hopefully this new host doesn't suck.  Monte Carlo Hosting was a small-time operation, but I thought they had pretty good service and we've had good performance while with them.

Now that we know what the hell domaincontrol.com actually is we're good, yeah. I heard back from them and all is well. Obviously we have no way of knowing what the new company is like, but I'll say at least that support has been very quick on the draw, and also nice and helpful. So here's hoping.

Never noticed a gap.

The top line of the page source now is:

Quote
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

So, we're in transition?

Yep, everything is working fine.  Good job everyone involved.  Boards are still nice and snappy, maybe even better than before.

Funny to think about that.  Seemed for awhile everything was moving to XHTML, but some people decided it was too document-centric and HTML5 was born.  XHTML is old hat.

But yeah, I don't think that line is any different than it was before.  It's just the defined DTD of the source code.  Transitional allows tags from HTML4 that were deprecated in XHTML1, where Strict wouldn't allow such tags.

Hmm.  There's nothing snappy about it this morning, taking 10-15 seconds to respond to every click.

Edit:  Make that 29 seconds for the post to go through initially.

Nothing slow here when I've tried. I'd say actually better than usual.

Also, it appears we may be much better off. I found an article when I was researching to make sure this acquisition actually happened, and I guess the guy who owned MonteCarlo was not so hot. There was a long horror story with a few others chiming in, and in the end it almost looks like he sold to get out form under the shit he'd piled on himself.

Either way, had a great experience with the support guy. He was very quick and helpful, answered the questions we had right off and responded quickly after we'd made the changes to make sure everything was good on their end as well. So I think we're better off.

EDIT - Haha, no sooner said... now I'm experience some considerable lag myself. If this keeps up and is noticeable by others, I'll contact them and see what's up.

Shortly after my last post, I could not get the page to respond at all.  ("Connecting to overwritten.net" status line in FF.)  I just came back, and all is well again, including response time.  I was doing other stuff online in the interim, so it wasn't a problem at my end.  Transition pains (not related to "transitional" :))?

Hey Que, can you link me to that article?  I'd be interested in reading it.  From what I gathered due to my experience with MCH over the years, it seemed like a two-person husband/wife shop.

http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92558 - It's not actually an article, just a forum post, I misspoke. I was half asleep when I read it but remember thinking that maybe it's better for us this way. Found a few other unfavorable reports around.

heh, looks like with the switchover they finally noticed we were over our allotted disk space. We can easily get back under by moving the podcasts off the server. Anyone feel like grabbing them for safe keeping? (I mean if we want to keep them at this point?) We can have the uploaded to some free podcast host if we really wanted.

I have all of the podcasts on my computer and on an external HD.

I'm getting 404s on all of them, so it's a good thing you have them.

That's because Idol removed them earlier tonight before you tried to get them.  If anyone wants them, let me know and I can send them to you somehow.

I was about to post about this here.  For some reason I received an e-mail last night regarding the account.

Interesting. When I originally went with MCH, it was because of all the favorable reports I saw on the SMF and TAZ forums.  Sounds like a pretty shitty situation and I definitely wouldn't have been happy if things like that happened to me.  We never hosted our domain registration with MCH.  It was always with GoDaddy.  So we would have been immune to most of those tactics.

Sorry for the hiccups. Site is back up again, outage was due to some PHP stuff incompatible with the way the host is doing things now. They switched us up so we're all good now.
