My pacifist WoW character run ends too soon
« on: Saturday, November 10, 2012, 06:54:28 PM »
I was playing the Starter Edition of WoW and to make things interesting I wanted to see if I could level a pacifist character to the Starter cap, which is level 20. That means I can't kill anything.

That obviously changes the game quite a bit. Lots of sneaking around and avoiding everything. The reason this is possible is Blizzard added the ability to gain XP from mining ore or picking herbs. The hardest part is at the start getting enough money to train those professions. Luckily I found a quest that I could complete at level 1 without having to kill anything, which gave me enough money to train. So began the journey of my night elf druid.

So the short version of the story is I made it to level 10 without killing anything, or even causing any damage. And no deaths! Hooray! But heres the bad part. The last quest I was doing to ding 10 in Westfall has you talk to some NPCs and bribe them for information. Sometimes they turn hostile. No big deal, I thought. Just run. Been doing it all along. But these guys never gave up and chased me all the way back to Stormwind! Whatever, I didn't hurt them or kill them. Except for the 2 that chased me...they counted as kills. No idea why. So my stats just after I ding 10 shows me having 2 kills. ARRRRRG!

So now I'm not sure what I want to do. I'm still running around in the default armor and technically I haven't killed anything (stats show I haven't caused even 1 damage). But my kill stat is blown. I'd have to start a new character and do that all again, this time avoiding that quest entirely. But...gah...I don't want to do that. Guess I can just play normally the next 10 levels.

I'd say if you've caused zero damage then the kill stat is just a technicality and can be ignored. Keep going!

Don't you come in here and tempt me with Guild Wars 2. If I knew it would work on my connection I'd be all over it.

Ok, I guess I'll keep going. Get it to 20! I know I'm doing this legit even if the stat doesn't back me up. I've had a couple of strange thoughts while working on this. Like...should I even be fishing? Aren't I technically killing the fish? What about the pet battles? Am I killing them, or since its my pets doing it is it ok?

Though I'm happy I did fishing. Made a bunch of gold fishing at the Darkmoon fair, and even got the Sea Pony pet and Sea Turtle mount as drops. The turtle is supposed to be super rare, too.

In Guild Wars 2 you get xp from crafting professions too. Though you'd probably have trouble gathering the materials without killing anything.

Also, GW2 is going to have a recruit a friend thing from Nov 15-18. I guess it's like an invite only free weekend, which coincides with the release of a content patch/world event called Lost Shores. People can start inviting on the 12th, so if you think you can get 16.5GB downloaded between the 12th and the 16th, you could probably get an invite from one of us (Xessive and I both play GW2, not sure who else).

Oh man. I should definitely try for that. Would give me a chance to see if its worth buying/if its playable.

Are all MMOs like GW2? I like the game a lot, but it doesn't feel immersive at all. In fact, it doesn't even pretend that everything around you going on is real, and is not following the mechanics of a game.

I've been playing MMOs so long that I'm not sure if I can really give a good answer to that question. I like to think some of them are pretty immersive, but compared to a lot of single player games I guess they're not. the problem is that most MMO players seem to be much more interesting in the leveling/equipment treadmill and game mechanics than they are the story and the world. If you make a game that's heavy on immersion, players who aren't interested in that get bored and quit. I know one guy who plays almost nothing but MMOs. This same guy tried Skyrim and quit in less than 30 minutes because "it was boring".

I recently got a different friend of mine to buy GW2. He was mildly interested in the open world PvE content, at least enough to keep playing for a while. Then I went with him to do some of the personal story missions he had. He was skipping every single cutscene the moment it came up. He wasn't even waiting for them to get boring, he just never gave them a chance. Without paying attention to the dialogue, he had no idea where to go. There was a lot of "what am I supposed to do now?". I told him that the personal story is optional, and if he's not interested in the story, he doesn't have to do it. He asked "do I get xp and loot for doing these?". I told him that he does, and he said, "well there you go".

When I first started playing MMOs (Star Wars Galaxies) I was 100% into who my character was int he world and even did some mild RP. After a few years and a few game changes, I ended up more interested in pwning noobs in pvp and getting leet gear. I'd power through any and all content as fast as possible and then ask "where's my loot? and then "what's next?" Now I've shifted a bit back to where I started. This is part of why I like GW2 more than a lot of other MMOs, because most of the endgame grind is for cosmetic stuff. I spend my time trying to make my character cooler, not trying to keep up with the gear treadmill.

In my experience, compared to other games and interactive experiences, MMOs have always been extremely dependent on displaying information and HUDs; it'a all about the data and digits on your screen that translate what's going on. I believe the main reason MMOs haven't really moved beyond that is due to latency and a truly immersive experience needs to be timed flawlessly.

Immersion in MMOs goes back to the player more than anything else. FOr me, GW2 is by far the most immersive MMORPG I've played, SWTOR as a close second. That's mainly because I'm very drawn to story and plot elements.

What's the PVP like in GW2?  How does it compare to WoW?  One of the main reasons I stopped WoWing was because the PVP got really boring/frustrating.
Suck it, Pugnate.

So, b/c I finished D3 recently, I wound up w/ a WOW: Battle Chest Key (WOW + BC + Lich King) in my e-mail.
For those who don't have finished D3 - you might want to check yours.

Anyways, I got the key activated and I guess I'm gonna give this a shot...
