Giantbombs Ryan Davis died
« on: Monday, July 08, 2013, 11:08:45 AM »
Tragic news. He was only 34 and just got married like last weekend, too. I am really bummed by this, I always looked forward to "Hey everybody its Tuesday!"

"Ryan Davis" is trending on twitter worldwide and is the #1 trend in San Fransisco. Dude will be missed.

I feel really bad and will miss listening to him.

Life can cut short abruptly guys. We are all in or close to our 30s. Now is the time to really take care of ourselves.

I was shocked to learn he was only 34. Looked in his 40s from his picture.

He was such a likable person and I will remember the podcasts where he reviewed exotic softdrinks at the start. I remember he once had Pakola (a Pakistani softdrink) and had a funny reaction. He was also a good journo.

Awful news. :( Absolutely awful. This sucks. :(

34 = way too young to go.

It feels like just yesterday, he was on E3 2013 and I was watching all of those Late Nite E32013 GiantBomb BombCasts - even up until like 1:30am.

Harmonix is doing a tribute to him right now:

EDIT:
Someone's tribute page to him:

Ex Giant Bomb website developer Dave Snider made that site.

34?  Jesus.  I think John Candy was around 30 years old when his size and lifestyle took him.  John Belushi, similar.  I can only guess what happened here, and I'll probably be wrong.  Trying to make sense out of senselessness is never too productive.  We'll find out more eventually.  For now, all I can do is express my sadness, and sympathy.  Rest in peace, Ryan.

Chris Farley as well.

I came across a post on the fitness section of Reddit a few days ago, the basic rundown being something like:

"I see a lot of old men.  I see a ton of them that drink occasionally.  I even see some that smoke.  You know what I never see? Overweight old men."

John Candy was in his mid-40's when he died.  I think your point remains just as valid despite that.

Anyway, Seeing the outpouring toward him makes me think I've really been missing something all these years with Giant Bomb.

Oh, you're right.  There's another twisted factoid in my brain for years, finally straightened out.  I was pronouncing Seth's last name "Ro-gen" too.   :-[

I know what you mean about feeling out of the GB loop.  I paid a lot of attention to the site after the Gamespot fiasco, but after that, I drifted away.  I didn't really connect.  Now this tragedy brings them back front and center, and I wonder what I've been missing.

I really don't care much for Gerstmann, which is mostly why I stayed away.

For me, all those guys over at GB are an extended bunch of friends, I think they've made themselves more personal to their audience than any other gaming site that I'm aware of. I've never met them but listening to Ryan every week with the other GB guys always guaranteed for some laughs and numerous memorable jokes and jabs at each other. I was actually pondering not that long ago how I would feel if one of them was gone, but now that it happened its impacting me more than I expected. I can't imagine how hard it's going to be for those actually close to him to move on from it. It sucks but Jeff has already said that the podcast will continue, Ryan wouldn't have it stopped on his account.

Well I'm still behind about a month on the bombcast episodes so ill at least get to enjoy Ryan's jovialness a few more times, I'll miss ya bud.

Hey everyone, it's Tuesday.

Just finished listening to it now.  I'm so glad they did this.  It was a really good way to put some kind of sense to this last terrible couple of days and very cathartic.  I'll echo Pyro's statement about the GB guys being an extended group of friends even though I have never met any of them personally, I'm going to miss Ryan so fucking much.

This all still makes me sad. I liked Ryan... you really couldn't not like him. He was just a funny, lovable kind of dude. Did anything ever surface as to what happened? I mean I know sometimes that's kept private, but I just kept wondering what it was that ended up getting him. Way too young. I'm only 3 years younger (that always puts these things in perspective a bit).
