Those terrible working conditi....oooh, cheap iPhone!

This article is amazing and disgusting at the same time.

Quote
China Labor Watch released a new report today on the working conditions of laborers at Apple supplier Pegatron. Its conclusion? They suck: too many hours, poor conditions, and underage workers.

But the report also leaks the first undeniably credible real hard-core traceable evidence of Apple’s cheaper iPhone.
The rest of the article focuses on the iPhone. That's not really what they should have gotten out of that report....

Ah, the cult of Apple lives.  Apple fandom is so pervasive that sometimes reading Apple-related articles is like reading IGN.  For instance, earlier today I saw an article from Apple Insider that said the Chromecast is evidence that Google is ditching Android over intellectual property issues ( http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/07/29/google-appears-ready-to-ditch-android-over-its-intellectual-property-issues).  Grasping at straws much?

In searching for that article I also found another one where some Apple site was trying to shit on the Chromecast (http://macdailynews.com/2013/07/26/the-mounting-disappointments-of-googles-chromecast/).  Apparently, "mounting disappointments" are four minor things, including that you need to power the device.  Duh!  HDMI does not supply power.  I guess the cancelation of the Netflix deal is a bummer.  But the fucking thing is $35!

Holy shit, it's $35?!  If that Netflix deal goes through somehow...BAM!

Also, that Apple Insider article is kind of intgeresting, but ridiculous...but the comments are the really amazing aspect.

But Idol raises an amazing point on some of the shittier aspects of our tech culture: Fair enough, it's Venture Beat, but the focus of the story SOMEWHERE should be the working conditions.

Also, Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave right now  - he was so against this move. I'm actually starting to think that Apple might be starting a downward spiral. (Hint: The lower budget iPhone is always the previous model, which is on the market far longer than any other company's previous flagship).

Apple is absolutely on a downward spiral. Steve Jobs was Apple. The company was on life support and doctors were already thinking it was a matter of time before the plug got pulled, but Jobs came back and brilliantly guided the company to consumer tech dominance. Already in the two years since his death we have seen Apple's meteoric rise essentially stop (and in terms of stock price plummet back to Earth).  Now Tim Cook has decided to ditch the premium pricing and fat profit margins to play the volume game.

In a sense, the fact that Apple crushed three home runs in the iPod, iPhone, and iPad in such a short timespan is working against them now.  Everyone is waiting for that next big, revolutionary product from Apple and anything that isn't that is bound to disappoint a lot of people.  iOS on my wrist?  *yawn*  That is like those Casio calculator watches from the 80's.  A brief curiosity and that is it.

I think an Apple TV (a real TV, not the thing they have now) could be that hit people are looking for and frankly I am surprised we haven't seen one by now considering they already have been selling high-quality displays in the Apple Cinema Display for ages now and they could sort of merge a large Cinema Display with an Apple TV.  Maybe they are trying to do something really creative and are working with content companies in the background.

Until iOS 7, I got the sense that people were starting to view iOS and its ridiculous skeuomorphism as dated and felt like it really wasn't that much different than the original iPhone OS.  I guess Apple got the memo too because iOS 7 is a pretty big change that brings things more in line with what is going on with the simple and mostly flat Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry OS 10, stock Android 4.x, and HTC Sense 5.  That said, this is the first time in a long time that Apple looks like the follower rather than the leader.

Edit:  As if on cue, I saw the following article while I was at lunch.  It's from ZDNet, which is basically click bait these days, but the article says some of the same things I said here.  http://www.zdnet.com/apples-race-to-2014-six-big-unknowns-7000018744/

Y'know how Chromecast is supposed to be $35? Well, it made it here in the UAE with select retailers and they're selling it for around $180. If I order it from the US and pay for shipping it wouldn't cost anywhere near that much!

That's crazy. Is it because all the oil sheikhs that own 20 Lamborghinis and get Ferrari to build them one-off custom cars?  Maybe Google thinks that price is acceptable there.

I just got mine the other day.  Other than it being ridiculously cheap, one thing I really like about it is that YouTube is almost like TV.  You can queue up a bunch of videos and just watch for hours, if you are so inclined.  But it does need more apps.  I tend to rend my movies from Amazon or Vudu and don't really see much reason to use Google Play Movies.  I also don't have a Netflix account and didn't get in on the free trial.  I would really like to see Amazon, Vudu, and MLB.tv on there.
