From the FAQ, about OpenMW.

Quote
OpenMW is an attempt to reimplement the popular role playing game Morrowind. It aims to be a fully playable, open source implementation of the game.
You must own Morrowind to use OpenMW.
For a brief overview of the project please watch the following short video FAQ and read the detailed information below:

To give you a better idea of what this project is about, here are some of the aims for the future of OpenMW:

Be a full featured reimplementation of Morrowind.
Run natively on Windows, Linux and MacOS X.
Support all existing content, including Tribunal, Bloodmoon and all user created mods.
Allow much greater modability: change game rules, create new spell effects, etc through scripting.
Fix system design bugs, like savegame “doubling” problem.
Improve the interface and journal system.
(Possibly) Improve game mechanics, physics, combat and AI.
(Possibly) Support multiplayer at some point.
(Possibly) Improve graphics to use more modern hardware.

Awesome, and today is Elder Scrolls day on the Steam Quakecon sale, so you can grab Morrowind for $5 if you don't already have it.

God I love that game. I'd love to see this actually make it to 1.0 and beyond, especially if things can be built upon to make it a better game. It's so good, with such a lovely world, but all the systems are so primitive.

What do you mean by the systems being primitive? In this engine?

No, I just mean like the game systems at work in the original MW. Maybe that was the wrong word to use. Just like the combat with its lame you-think-its-real-time-but-it's-also-dice-rolls stuff, the general awkwardness of the NPCs who wander aimlessly back and forth, the sort of janky/cardboard spellcasting, the rain and weather effects that go through solid architecture, the wonky quest/journal system, the obtuse UI, all that kind of stuff. But I feel like they're still small gripes for how wonderful the game is at its heart.

Ah, ok.

I need to play it again soon. I never even finished the main quest. I just wondered around and explored the world. After playing Skyrim with its much simpler gameplay I kind of want to play something with a bit more complexity to it.
