Never got into these games so much but this next one looks fantastic.

Feels like Skyrim in Space, I'll definitely check it out.

That does indeed look fantastic.

It's weird that I never got into the X space-sim games; I loved Darkstar One and Microsoft's Freelancer, X:Rebirth looks like it's more in line with those games.

I tried to give one of the X games a go a while back. I can't remember if it was X2 or X3. At that point it felt bland and, looking back, it was a lot of the problems I with pre-Skyrim Elder Scrolls games. It didn't grab me enough to want to sink the time required in. Combine that with a what felt like a stilted combat compared to something like Freespace and I was done for.

That said, that trailer looks pretty fantastic. I really dig the hiveness of all the space installations.

I played the first X and it was fantastic. The systems weren't all perfect, but the ship designs were fun, the universe was big and there was lots to do, and you could really play in a lot of different ways. I might check into this later as I'm always looking for a fun open-ended space sim. I love X because you can buy businesses and automate the use of your other ships to ferry stuff around while you're out blowing shit up. It was great. Never played the others, though. Only thing I ever play now is the occasional five minutes of Galaxy on Fire 2 on my iPod, which is great but just a little too limited by comparison to something as big as X was.

Humble Weekly Sale this week is basically the entire X series on Steam.

Everyone who's missing X games and likes complex space-sims - GET THIS!!

Also, for those who ain't fond of Steam, since X3: Albion Prelude requires Steam most places - once you DL the game via Steam and whatnot, you can get a Non-Steam EXE for it from EgoSoft's website and throw it in your Steam game-folder.
Just know this - running that Non-Steam EXE, don't expect some Steam features (Steam Achievements + Dead is Dead Mode)

Yeah, you'll still have to deal w/ Steam DRM for their other games, though - keep that in mind.
It's just Albion Prelude (b/c it requires Steam everywhere) that has a Non-Steam DRM EXE for download.
Their other games before Albion, you can find elsewhere selling DRM-FREE versions - like Gamersgate; or grab a Retail Disc version and then patch the DRM out.
They should've offered up DRM-FREE versions of all those games before Albion, as well.

Also, keep in mind - each Tier in the HB is ONLY ONE Steam key.
They ain't separate keys (in case you want to give away and/or trade any extra keys you get).

Tier 1 = ONE key for X: Beyond The Frontier + X-Tension + X2: The Threat + X3: Reunion.
Tier 2 = ONE key for X3: TC + X3: Albion Prelude + X Superbox Goodies/Extras

Yeah, I have retail X2. And if I'm playing the latest X3 I'm unlikely to play the other games in the series anyway.

I've been playing it and it's not pretty but it has potential. The core gameplay is alright though there's a lot to remember(T for abilities, press 5 for crew, etc.) but the game is, with all due respect to Egosoft, an unpolished mess. It feels like a beta and looks like a low budget title. Texture quality is way below standards too.

The main issues I've been facing are low fps, polygon popping (enter an area and stuff starts popping in slowly), and just a general "this is ugly" reaction.

Judging from the forums, people have been having significantly worse issues with the game that I have. Luckily, it hasn't crashed for me but the framerate is woefully low considering my specs (GeForce 780M 4GB, Core i7 4th gen) which can easily run Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4 on ultra settings maintaining 60+ fps. There's no reason X-Rebirth should be running under 20 fps.

Egosoft have got a lot to work on to polish Rebirth up. It could be fantastic.

@Xessive

I been reading Steam Forums, EgoSoft Forums, and saw RPS's early impressions and take on it.
Wow, sounds like Alpha-in-a-box. :(

I really hope they can overhaul this game into something great.

Gonna have to wait for a MAJOR sale.

Bluesnews -> New patch released puts the 64-bit EXE for X Rebirth as the default.

Quote
We are now sufficiently confident about the 64-bit version of the game to make this the default. Both 64-bit and 32-bit versions now include this information in the game's start menu.

If you encounter serious problems with 64-bit and would like to try reverting to 32-bit then you can subscribe to the 32-bit "beta" using the Steam client. To start using the 32-bit version. right-click X Rebirth in the Steam client, select Properties and go to the Betas tab then select release_32 from the dropdown list. If you are running a 32-bit version of Windows you will automatically receive the 32-bit version of the game, though such Windows versions remain unsupported.

Note: The system requirements for the game have always stated that it requires a 64-bit version of Windows, and that future updates for the 32-bit version are not guaranteed indefinitely.

We suggest that if you create a savegame in 64-bit you use that savegame with subsequent 64-bit-versions only and do not load it into a 32-bit version. While we do not know of any issues in practice with savegames between the two versions, there is a theoretical possibility that you might corrupt your savegame to a point where it cannot be restored if you load a 64-bit savegame into a 32-bit version.

Great! It's nice that Egosoft are really trying to save the game. The 2.0 patch improved a lot of stuff but the core gameplay was still monotonous and the menus are still a chore. Supposedly the next major patch (v2.5) is going to revamp the menu system and improve a lot of core stuff.

So, I've got about approximately 6 hours w/ X Rebirth so far, and I'm still trying to assemble my thoughts on this game. My thoughts so far on this game: it's a mess, just like these thoughts likely will be. It's hard to say how I really feel about this game - since there's a lot to this game (like most X games, it's complex) and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of this game even after some 6 hours; a lot has changed since X3 series of games (X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict, and X3: Albion Prelude); and there's the technical issues that are driving me nuts. At times, this game is a brilliant open-world space-sim with outstanding graphics (when in space); and at other times, it's down-right awful b/c of technical issues + its (lack of) production values.

Technical issues are my biggest problem and hurdle w/ this game. Trying to get this game to perform well has been - hell. And it still is, on my rig (i7 950; 1 GB VRAM of GF GTX 560 Ti; 8 GB DDR3 RAM; Win 7 64-bit OS). With stuff set on High at 1080p, this game was a disaster - expect framerates of 15 to 30 frames per second, on the regular. With a more Custom setting and no framerate-limiting program - framerates could dips can go from 50 frames per second to 30 frames can happen in an instant. So, if you have a framerate limiting program that gets along with this game (EVGA Precision X 15 doesn't seem to and would cause crashes whenever; yet EVGA Precision X 16 does work fine here and was causing no problems when running it with X Rebirth) - you might want to limit the framerate, so you don't have too many stutters and can get the game moving in a much more smooth + fluid manner. Going for a Custom setting in-game and tweaking things a bit - with in-game settings in 1080p, with some stuff on, some on Normal, VSync Off; and with a combination EVGA Precision X 16 limiting the framerate to 35 frames maximum - I've been able to achieve around 25-35 frames per second consistently. This is much more acceptable than the inconsistencies and wild framerates before that I was getting at any moment in time.

This isn't the end of technical issues. I have experiences some bugs, as well. One bug was the sound disappears from the game completely, causing me to get somewhere to save, close the game out, and then reboot the game - just to get things back in order. Sometimes when entering highways from going to one part of space to another - the game will stutter, lock-up, and freeze-up: whether it's for a few moments; or entirely cause the game to need to be closed-out. I had to drop my sound-card settings a bit, just to stop the crackling of sound issues.

Graphics in this game are a mixed bag, both technically and artistically. Namely, when out in space, flying around, seeing stations, and seeing details galore of ships and stations - this game is downright gorgeous. You'll spend most of your time probably doing that stuff, thankfully. Now, when you're on a station or ship: areas and character models + environment often look generic, not that detailed at all, and often repeated + recycled - as if they were an after-thought.

Let's get to some of the stuff about the Campaign. The game's voice-acting and dialogue b/t the two main characters (you and your co-pilot): it's just not good at all. Certainly, a lot of this stuff b/t your main character and your co-pilot is just either not interesting for actual dialogue, poorly voice-acting, or a combination of both.

The thing is this: you really should play the Campaign first - especially if you're new to the X series; and actually even if you're a X series veteran. While some elements of X3 series have returned, not everything has. Some things have been removed (it seems like you're stuck here with only one ship to purchase - at least so far, anyways) or changed entirely (though, your one ship is seems to have more upgradable pieces + parts than in the previous X3 games). B/c things have been changed or removed, even players of the X3 games might want to learn what's changed - and the best way to do that, is to experience the Campaign.

Free Form Mode feels like the game expects you to actually know how to already play the game. Free Form Mode feels like something those who are looking for a End-Game open-world should experience, since it is not teaching you how to play the game. I started with this - and it felt like a mistake, barely holding your hand at all and barely giving you any instructions. And certainly, if any games needs to hold your hand and teach you how to play - the X games certainly do need this, since they are so complex and very deep.

X games are always very complex, have a steep learning curve, and ain't always the easiest to learn - but X Rebirth's campaign does a good job of actually teaching you this stuff. All of the X3 games have not done even close to remotely as well as what's done here in X Rebirth, when it comes to teaching the player how to play the game. Campaign Mode is mixing both a tutorial on how to play the game; and the so-called story & character development b/t the two main characters + the galaxy and conflicts they're stuck in. So, if I think the Campaign is a good place for new players and X series veterans to start.

Also, you're going to have to actually fly around to different sections of these huge stations, dock on there, get off your ship to enter the area, meets NPC's, and do your business with them face-to-face in a first-person perspective. Besides the game's story when in Campaign mode, there's also tons of side-quests to do and perform, if you so desire. While NPC's ain't often loaded w/ personality (since there are lots of them, since this game is ridiculously huge in scope) and are often generic (think like Morrowind here, but with actual full-blown voice-acting), it does get the player more so into the atmosphere and style of the X Universe more so than ever by allowing such interactions w/ NPC's. This game isn't just loads + loads of menus and menus galore anymore - since in previous X3 games, you just docked somewhere - and then had tons of menus to access on what to buy, sell, trade, who to deal with, etc etc.

When out in space, you could fly your way into combat. And these seems to be happening more so than the previous X3 games. You'll just run into enemies when on a mission; sometimes they might just in an area surrounding a station; or there could be something just happening out in the middle of nowhere in space in some sector - and this stuff is fantastic. Combat feels pretty good, when dog-fighting, rolling, dodging, and moving around in space in your ship, all out in space. Simply put: it's a blast to shoot enemies out of space, whether by guns or missiles. It feels much more fluid, visceral, and satisfying here in X Rebirth, when compared to previous X3 games.

By default, your camera is locked when you're in your ship. While the cam is locked, you are doing this to normally either fly straight ahead or backwards, sit still in space, and/or access many of the numerous menus. You can hold left-mouse (by default) to make the ship and cam move free-form for as long as you hold it to make the camera and your ship fly straight ahead. When unlocked, you can hit the space key (by default) as a toggle - which feels like the free-form ship movement toggle, where you can control and move your ship mostly with just the mouse in Freelancer, moving the mouse in any direction to move in any direction. All of this stuff - looks and feels great with a keyboard + mouse.

Also, if you want to - I've barely tested this, but it actually does feel decent + streamlined for it: this game has gamepad support; and it works fine with the X360 GamePad. I still prefer the insane amount of hot-keys on the keyboard and precision of shooting when in space with the mouse, when compared to the lack of buttons on the gamepad + lack of precision for shooting with the analog sticks on the gamepad.

When the technical + production values issues aren't getting in my way, which seems to be too often currently to my liking, there is this: a fun Campaign here with a good deal of awesome action and a completely open-world space-sim going on here. It's hard for me to currently given my entire thoughts on the game, as I do feel I've barely scratched the surface on what I can do in this game - namely, because I'm still roaming around the game-world and it's still also teaching me how to play. I've barely got into getting drones and assembling a team for my ship that also will run beside me, for example. This game surely could use some more patches to fix optimization issues, bugs, and other nonsense.

EgoSoft has been constantly patching this game for around a year already, so that's definitely a step in the right direction - I wish more companies would try to fix their issues and overhaul their games, when they're releasing the game in a not-so-good state. Plus, EgoSoft was wise and have this game is part of Steam's own Steam Workshop - there are mods available for this game, from modders. Let's hope for the best, from both EgoSoft + modders; since this game's in both of their hands. Until then, though - I still need much more time with this, before I can come to some kind of verdict with X Rebirth.

Wow, thanks for all the impressions. I almost wanted to give this a go at one point, but I figured I wouldn't be able to run it well (or, you know, at all). Even with the issues it sounds neat, though I don't like every idea that was implemented.

Let us know how it goes for you as you keep playing, I'll be curious to hear your take after you invest some more time.

Yeah, I'm still going to keep at it. So, do expect more details impressions of it, eventually. This game, like most EgoSoft X games, has so much going on - it's hard early on a lot of times to decide even how you feel about them, even after say 10-20 hours. I barely feel like I've scratched the surface here, of what you can do in this game - after my 6 hours or so total with it, according to Steam. Not only that - but the technical frustrations been getting in my way quite a bit early, so I've spent a fair deal of trying dealing w/ those, as well.

Best Buy has it for $4 still, if you're curious yourself - this game requires Steam, BTW.
If you got a local Best Buy; got some coupons so you can avoid shipping and order it online; or don't mind paying shipping and order it online - it's so damn dirt-cheap, it could be worth the risk. Could be worth the shot + risk of checking-out or even just holding onto until you get a more powerful system or until it gets patched-up more - since this game has never been this cheap before, the cheapest it's been before-hand looks like $25 on Steam, according to IsThereAnyDeal.com. I'd doubt it's gonna get much cheaper digitally - seems like Best Buy is just trying to clear the stock out, since nobody even has come remotely close to that $4 price.

Plus, Version 3.0 is in Beta - and supposedly fixes some of the sound-issues. EgoSoft seems to still be working on patching this game and adding things (i.e. the new side-bar menu wasn't in the game, a few patches back; and they've added new missions in patch 2.0 called Secret Service Missions) and that's even a year after it's been out - so, that's good that they seem like they are still trying to improve the game. Plus, Teladi Outpost DLC which is upcoming for Pre-Order right now is FREE to game-owners.

Granted, you see my specs - so, you do have an idea how it runs on systems around that range. No clue what you have for a system.

My PC is a little over 3 years old - and I built it myself. And back when I built it, I had a lot of high-end stuff. So, um...yeah - if your PC's 6 years old, might wanna check to see if you meet the min's. If you do - yeah, you might be looking at running in it 720p...or below that. Hell, at this price - even if you can't run it, might be worth putting aside until you upgrade or buy/build a new PC.

If you're curious of this game's PC requirements - they're on the Steam page.
So, yeah - I'm definitely a little bit above the recommended specs...so that gives you an idea on how to run it, if you're aiming for 1080p. B/c it seems like I've finally found something worthwhile, after wrestling w/ trying to get it to run somewhat decent + remain gorgeous (well, at least it looks gorgeous, when flying in space) in 1080p.

I will take some screenies of my settings, to give you an idea of what exactly I got set where on my PC.

EDIT:
Oh, I should note - the retail box comes w/ a few extras.

The game contains a small mini-art book (physical copy).

The first DVD is the game; and a bonus disc DVD.
Bonus DVD contain making of this game; the game's soundtrack; and EgoSoft's X Encyclopedia E-Book.

EDIT 2:
I have a few screenies up of my Settings + of what the game looks like, if anyone's interested:
