Don't Starve (and Don't Starve Together)

Go to the site and poke around. Then buy the game. It's even better than the trailer makes it look. Plus it's on sale at the Humble Store for 9 bucks and it's worth every penny.

Think something like a cross between a roguelike and a Terraria/Minecraft-style builder. Vast wilderness, you find stuff, you build stuff, which lets you build more stuff. You try to kill things, things try to kill you, you maybe starve to death or go insane. And when you die, that's it. You're dead. Start over. But you get experience which gradually builds up on unlocks new characters.

Art and music are just fantastic. Trust me, you want this.

It's so weird that we haven't had a Don't Starve thread until now! ;D

I'm inclined to like anything from Klei Entertainment even when it's not a genre I usually play. The art style, the gameplay, everything they make seems to focus on the player experience.

I've played I think 4 games at this point. Last one was my record at 12 days. You find so much random, crazy, cool stuff each time, and the further you make it, the weirder shit gets. Obviously, you find out a good portion of it the hard way. Also, sometimes you get lucky and stuff turns out to not kill you or to have a surprising effect when you aren't expecting it.

This is a tough one to die in, though, I'll say that. It takes a while for you to get your sea legs again on any new world, as resources are so random, it's hard to say what you'll have access to. And since the night requires you to basically chill out, or just do some busywork around camp while you wait (night is thankfully much shorter), it hamstrings your progress somewhat in the early stages while you're just collecting what you need to get started.

But yeah, this game is great, has a wide variety of stuff (I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of the surface at this point, honestly ... I've seen screenshots of people on like day 65+), and just bleeds personality and dark humor. Highly recommended.

I played for a bit after it went on sale at GoG earlier in the year. In one playthrough I lasted maybe 30-40ish days and I mostly died because I got stuck in a resource rut. That time took me through at least one winter and I was really proud out of that. The trick was I spawned relatively close to a grassland with tons of bunnies and a herd of beefalo. Between trapping bunnies and using manure I had a nice stockpile of meat and veggies. The downside to that map was I had very little in the way of more exotic resources making it very difficult to do more advanced crafts. On top of that, I was sort of forced to hunker down all winter and with nights lasting much longer I couldn't travel far. At this point wild dogs were getting really hard to fight off and I eventually got taken down.

Resurrecting this thread to talk about Don't Starve Together, the standalone multiplayer expansion for Don't Starve. In short, it's really, really great. Heather and I have been playing a bunch of it over the last week or so. Tons of fun, and despite not having a bunch of new content, the game feels pretty new with the addition of other people.

Would love to play some of this with you guys! I have a Discord server set up for voice chat, which works really well, and even went so far as to get a dedicated server running for this, which is what Heather and I have been playing on. Idol tried to get on with us but didn't have any luck, sadly, due to his connection speed. But yeah, if anybody's interested, we should totally play some!
