In the cops' defense, he had a previous conviction for assault (unarmed), and they had (probably bullshit) reports that he would be armed. (They also expected to find weapons at his home, which they didn't. And they killed his dog.)

Change 'beneath' to 'within' and I'd agree. This tactless, trigger-happy bullshit has to stop.

Haha, oh wow.  I read the story on IGN and I think I got confused, as it pointed to a crappy source that basically said "police shot a man holding a controller.  More details when they come".

I'm not saying this case is justified, but I can see things from a cops point of view. You go to a place to catch a perp suspected of robbery. Hes had trouble before, and you happen to have dug up a picture of him and his buddies holding firearms. You suspect he may be armed when you arrive. Open the door and hes got *something* in his hand. It look vaguely like a pistol. You've got less than one second to decide if its something harmless or if this dude is going to shoot you in the face. I know I'd be going for a "shoot first ask later", but thats why I'm not a cop.

Yeah, but here's my take- the dude isn't going to be pointing the controller at the cops. The only way they would shoot is if they felt that they were in some sort of immediate danger, cops can't shoot unless this is the case. If he is just holding it by his side, the cops should yell at him to drop it.

But, obviously, I have no idea what actually happened, so this may not be anywhere close to the scenario.

Besides how do we even know he was holding the controller? The only living witnesses to this are the cops themselves and people are willing to do desperate things when it comes evading to jail time.

Also again I think we give too much leeway to law enforcers. They took that job knowing the risks, and knowing what it takes. Innocent lives are innocent lives.

This reminds me of a movie where Tom Selleck holding a hair dryer is shot in his house by a coked-up dirty cop.  The cop had the wrong address.  Not saying the cop in the real incident was bad or wrong, because that would be just conjecture.  The facts just reminded me of the movie.  Going to imdb now . . .
