The Backloggery
« on: Friday, September 04, 2015, 01:10:55 AM »
Apparently this was old news to some, but it was new news to me. Super helpful site for tracking your games and your game progress. Have a problem buying games you'll never play? Or buying more games than you could realistically play in your life? Just want to finish more of the stuff you spend your money on? Might want to sign up.

To give you an idea, this is my backlog: http://www.backloggery.com/quemaqua

I'm trying to focus on playing strictly Japanese games at this point, so the only games on there are Japanese games or NA games with language options. This isn't a site that actively provides game details, so you enter it manually, which is great since you don't have to worry about what their database does or doesn't have. You also don't have to worry about things being broken, like with Darkadia for the last ... forever. I liked Darkadia for what it was, but the fact that it's been continuously broken in some fashion for a long time frustrated me, and this is more focused on metrics, not just a place for storing your collection (though you can certainly use it for that too without issue ... you can even null out games you want listed but don't want contributing to your stats).

Anyway, check it out. If it sounds at all useful or fun to you, give it a shot. It's free and I'm super happy with it. Also, it doesn't really take that long to enter in game information. I took a few hours to enter in the 100 games I have on there over a couple days, just here and there while I was watching TV, and it only really took that long because I was commenting everything pretty heavily, plus went back and made some edits since I realized most people who might look at my page and be curious wouldn't be able to read the Japanese names.

I'm interested in this but don't know if I'll ever actually spend the time.   Which is weird because I use evernote to keep a little list of games I'd like to play and then cross them off.  For me, that doesn't even necessarily mean I've played through them - just that I don't want to anymore.   For instance, Stranger's Wrath was on that list forever and I just crossed it off.  I've played through the start like 6 times and never really got into it or I stopped for whatever reason, I don't even care anymore.

Yeah, I'd hate to put myself on there on check out my PC collection.

I have so many games across so many platforms digitally (Origin, GOG, UPLAY, Gamersgate, and other services); games from retail...
...And then there's Steam itself where I have 1152 games + 453 DLC's.

Yeah, I'll never get caught up.

They have considerations for that kind of thing, gpw. It's pretty flexible. I like having a little something more visual and functional to keep track of stuff. I haven't been using it much lately just because i've had little time for games, and have been absorbed in some English stuff rather than my Japanese backlog, which is all I use it for. But I like having it around.

I honestly don't understand the use of this. All of my game clients keep lists of the games I own and I have a shelf of my physical games for consoles. I know what games I've played through and the games I have not. If I find a game I have not played through that I want to play I... you know... play it.

Hahaha.   I get what you're saying but I kind of like crossing stuff off a list.   Well, that and it forces me to actually think about what I want to play out of what I already own, rather than just buying something I think I may want to play.

It also forces you to actively look at and sort through your collection in a way that buying stuff and letting it just filter onto an automated list (or your shelf) does not. When you have to actively add a game, you have to think about the fact that you just bought something when you have x number of games already. It also reminds you that oh yeah, you were playing that other game, maybe you don't need to start another unless you actually feel done with the first one.

Plus like gpw said, it's nice to cross stuff off a list, and it may provide a nicer way to view your collection and think about what you plan to play next.

Backloggery is neat, but I prefer using a combination of How Long to Beat and Darkadia. How Long to Beat is great for me since I get an idea of how long the next game in my backlog is going to take me and Darkadia has a nice digital shelf aspect to it for the collector in me with some aspects of what I'm playing embedded in it.  I wish there was a site that had both the detailed info of how long a game is combined with the detail of managing your collection, but most sites I have found don't do enough of one of things I want.

I actually look at How Long to Beat a lot.
