Amazon launches game engine Lumberyard

A fork of CryEngine, it's free to download and use. Source code included. Has integration with Amazons cloud stuff and Twitch. I knew Amazon was building up a gaming division but I didn't expect something like this to come out of it. Will be interesting to see if it gets used much.

Was CryEngine open source as well?  I wasn't aware of that.  If not, how did Amazon manage to open source a fork of a closed source engine?

This article from April last year now makes a lot more sense. Seems Crytek was in a bad spot and Amazon was able to get itself a good licensing deal.
