In an introductory video released today (http://www.nintendo.com/switch), Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

looks interesting, though the reveal trailer raises serious questions about both battery life and the durability of those moving parts.

What struck me is how easy it would be to lose or break those little side pieces.  And yes, how rugged are these things? Lots of sliding together has to take a toll.

Cool idea, though.  It's a home console.  It's a portable.  Even as a portable, it can be used in different ways.

I agree it looks really interesting. I think I'd get that Pro controller for home use and not slide the little side bits off all the time. But those side controllers are actually really cool on this thing, allowing you to set up a way to play portably with someone else.

Looks like we'll see Splatoon brought over, but one thing I noticed in the trailer is it doesn't appear to have a touchscreen. So no Mario Maker? That'd be a shame.

That looks really intriguing!

I have no real input just yet but my interest is definitely piqued.

This is the exact same thing I thought.

I'm way more into this than either the Wii or Wii U. This might bring me back to Nintendo, but we'll have to see.

IGN got some more details confirmed.

Quote
"If a Nintendo Switch game supports amiibo then the Nintendo Switch home gaming system will as well," a Nintendo representative told IGN.

Amiibo! I know how excited we all are for that.

Quote
Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

So the system is the little tablet bit. Nintendo did have a patent for something that allowed a system to dock and the dock providing more computing power. Now this quote doesn't leave that possibility out, so I guess we'll see. Maybe the power "ramps up" with the dock and the CPU/GPU goes into a more power conservative mode when portable?

Quote
When asked if the Nintendo Switch will have touchscreen support, Nintendo declined to comment.

"We will make additional announcements about the Nintendo Switch hardware later, before the launch of the product," Nintendo told IGN.

Honestly, I think it will. There is too much potential to leave it out. If I had to guess, they don't want to get people confused thinking this is a new Wii U gamepad or something. Show off whats new and unique about this system first, then later of "Yeah, of course it has touch."

I was oing to say I'd be surprised if it wasn't touchscreen (fucking capacitive Nintendo, jesus).....but then you'd have to mandate that all touch controlled games would also have to have alternate controls when docked?  It'll be interesting to see what they do there.

Edit:

Maybe it's just me, but I found the excitement from die hard Nintendo fans over Skyrim in the reddit thread on the trailer pretty funny and telling.  It really shows the state of the libraries of the last few nintendo consoles when people are that excited over hints of a five year old game that has been released on every major platform made in the last ten years at least once now.

All I want to know is if it can play all the Wii U games.

I'm doubting backwards compatibility. New architecture (ARM) and no disc drive. I guess they maybe could let digital games work? But still with the different architecture they'd still have to basically be porting the games.

I mean...unless that dock is more than a dock? What if the Dock itself was a Wii U? I see there are 2 ports on it in the image I posted...what are those ports for?

EDIT

Interesting observation someone made. There were no children in this reveal. Shows where Nintendo might be aiming this thing.

This is the first console I'll purchase with my children in mind.

Course it appears it'll have Splatoon, so it'll have me in mind as well.
